For some reason, my system32 folder disappeared. I cant run any programs that depend on the "library files" and cant run command prompt. help :whistling: :) :help: :) Also, when i try to create another folder with the name "system32" in the "WINDOWS" folder in My Computers, it gives me an error:

"Cannot rename New Folder: A file with the name you specified already exists. Specify a different file name"

Thanks in advance.

P.S. when i try to run Command prompt it gives me the 16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem error:

"C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.com
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application."

can you find any other folders starting with S....or maybe the letter q?

I can only find the folders:

security
ServicePackFiles
ShellNew
SoftwareDistribution
srchasst
Sun
system

these are the folders that start with s or q that i have in my "WINDOWS" folder

and the folder "ServicePackFiles" has a folder inside called "i386" and the files inside had a whole bunch of .dll files and the "cmd" file thing. I think the "System32" folder may have been renamed to "ServicePackFiles" when I installed the Windows Service Pack 3

You can use this guide to repair XP

Possibly, you will need to boot the PC and keep tapping the delete key until the PC enters set up. Change the boot order to CD ROM Drive then hard drive, press F10 then press enter, load the XP CD then type Y then press enter, as it reboots, look for press any key to load from CD, press enter

You will need the XP product key to complete this

If you have audio / video files which are subject to DRM you should check with the provider for known issues with performing an XP repair install

XP Repair Install

Windows XP repair feature won't delete your data, installed programs, personal information, or settings. It just repairs the operating system

After running XP Repair you will need to install all Windows Updates

Microsoft Update

You should see boot priority / boot order with C / CD ROM / A if you press the page up key this should change, you need CD ROM / C / A

press F10 to save, type Y to exit, insert the XP CD, press enter

You went into the Recovery Console, which is not where you want to be. Follow the link in Keith's previous post or you can also find the same link in my signature as well.

I did as you specified, but ended up with no System32 file, and my computer is about 4 times as slow as it had been before I repaired. My ram capacity shows the same number, but it seems that I can do much less processes than before

Click start then all programmes, accessories, system tools to run disc clean up, then also from system tools, run disc defragmenter

Click start then run, type prefetch then press enter, click edit then select all, (all files will highlight), right click any file, click delete, confirm then reboot.

Download, install and run
Tune Up 2006 Trial

Run Tune Up disc clean up

Run Tune Up registry clean up

Click Optimize and Improve to run Reg Defrag, the screen will lose colour during the process which can take a few minutes and then needs a reboot

Those will have cleared the drive of obsolete software errors

These are suggestions for making the most of the free trial

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to optimize the computer, select computer with an internet connection from the drop down menu, this also requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to accelerate downloads, select the speed just above your actual connection speed, this requires a reboot.

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to run system advisor

Have you got a screenshot of the windows folder

Run this
