i recentley installed a new nvidia geforce 6600 club graphics card so i could play the godfather and farcry everything went fine played games ok for about a month. when i tried to play MOHAA and return to castle wofenstein the game kept randomly crashing with an " abnormal program termination" error message so i tried all the latest updates and drivers inculding chipset and bios update still the same problem.

then my pc started crashing when not playing the games . so i have now done a complete re-install of windows and formatted hard drive to ntfs.
i am running F-Secure anti-virus and it finds nothing.

i have pasted my dxdiag information below
i hope somebody can either help me or lend me a sledgehammer ???

Hi Lee,

Abnormal crashes are usually driver issues, but since you have covered that, let's move on.

Have you ever run a memory test on this machine?

Go to teh following site, and download the memtester

http://www.memtest.org/

There is a floppy and CD version. Reboot your machine with the memory tester and let it run for at least 3 cycles. report back

Before buying another power supply. borrow one.

Putting in a power supply is the easiest thing in the world. 4 screws, two plugs to the motherboard, a plug to each drive.

As a test, you do not even need to uninstall the old power supply.

Remove an adequate power supply from another system

Unplug your PC from the wall

Open your case on your faulting system, ground your self by touching a metal piece of the case to discharge any static electricity and unplug the power connectors to the motherboard.

Be careful, each has a latch

Now unplug your drives.

Set the borrowed power supply on a phone book or two so it is not touching anything that it could ground out to and plug the motherboard and drives in. Plug your power cord from the computer into the borrowed power supply

Power up your machine and run it....does the problem repeat

Just to let you know where i am going with this--

Since you added a new, higher powered videocard, I suspect it is drawing more power.

Your old power supply may have rating of say 350 watts, which would be adequate for your system, but the stated power supply is likely in PEAK Watts

It probably is not consistantly supplying the needed wattage for this new videocard

250 watt power supply---that really makes me think the PSU is the issue

Just what do you have running in this system?

download Everest Home

http://www.geekstogo...tion=show&id=13

unzip it, install it, and then save a report and ATTACH it to your next post

i have attched the EVEREST report as requested by the way my machine is a HP pavillion a330

i hope we are getting closer to solving this issue

also if i run speedfan and set all fans to a 100% then it seems to take longer for the pc to crash i dont know if this is relevant or not .???
once again thanks for the help so far .

is speedfan reporting a temp? Everest does not report a temp for you CPU

Have you visited the HP site and downloaded all the latest updates?

Your system is not as overloaded as I might have guessed, but that 6600 videocard is really pulling a lot more watts than your previous card

Also, have you downloaded the latest nvidia drivers from their site

http://www.nvidia.co...ers/drivers.asp

i have downloaded all the latest updates from hp and also all the latest nvidia drivers both graphics card and chipset .

speedfan reports temp:1 at between 31 and 44
temp:2 -1 which is constant
temp:3 -1 which again is constant
HDO: 37

is that the info you required from speedfan??

as for the video card pulling ore watts i still got the crashes when i tried to go back to my original video card which is a Nvidia geforce mx 440 64mb at first i thought it was an issue with the new graphics card falling over on the games. but when the system starting freezing even when not playing games i decided to go for a re-install of windows and now its still crashing on games and general usage. but i havnt tried it with the old graphics card since the re-install. as i loaded windows with the new card onboard.

i dont want to reload all my old software back on until i know the machine is stable again.

and as i say the pc seems to run for longer if i turn the fans up to 100% in speedfan although saying that there is not a definate pattern to the times between crashes anyway which is why im so lost with it all ..

31 to 44 is a big range, but not a dangerous range

still think that power supply is too small, but let's take a peak one more place

start > run, type
eventvwr.msc
<enter>

Right click application and choose CLEAR ALL EVENTS, do not save the log
Right click system and choose CLEAR ALL EVENTS, do not save the log

Reboot. Work with computer until error recurs. reboot

start > run, type
eventvwr.msc
<enter>

Look under systems and applications for items with red Xs that happened at the SAME time as your problem...list them here.

ok i got the following message from evntvwr from the time the pc crashed which was during game play .

in the description it says " the remote access connection manager service terminated with service specific error 3221356592 (0xC0020030).

this same message appears twice in the system event viewer a couple of seconds apart and since i have been typing this message it has appeared twice again but this time it did not crash when these error messages occured.

there is also a message in the application error category which reads " faulting application wolfsp.exe, version 0.0.0.0 faulting module wolfsp.exe, version 0.0.0.0 fault address 0x000666dd."

start > run
services
<enter>

Scroll down and look for the following
Telephony
Remote Access Connection Manager
Remote Access Auto Connection Manager

Any disabled? Enable them

You have 768mb of ram...in what configuration?

I know that the memtest checked it as clear, but I have had memtest check them as clear and still be bad. You might consider removing one stick at a time and seeing if the error repeats
