How do you become a software tester? For example how would I be one of the people who tests vista and then sends in a survey or questionare on how it went. when gmail was really beta and very exclusive, how would I have signed up to be some one who tested it? I always wanted to be able to test or review games before they came out.

A great deal is word of mouth, most of the closed betas im on or have been on its been through a freind of a freind or some such or through one im allready invloved in which i can then share with my friends. The key is to be invloved in the communities if you want to be approached for smaller betas MS you get in through Live beta(im in that) or MSDN which im not on yet. Games are more exclusive testers are brought in to play the games due to the nature of them they usaully arent advertised as there has to a be trust element there, ive not seen any open game betas happen alot unless the game itself, the testing surmounts to a really extensive alpha testing.

Gmail to get in there was a few community picks and then it passed on word of mouth from there i got into gmail when it was in Beta from a school friend who had gotten on it from one of the original testers invitiation(afer they put on invitiations to the beta).

Games you dont have alot of chance but you can get on tonnes of betas if you look around but unless you are into the application or its development its not usaully worth it because they are relativley untested applications and its usually in beta staged past surveys or faqs its run this until it breaks then send us the report or a break it then tell us how you did it. Of all the betas im on now the only two that im getting any advantage or use out of is the Live Betas for messenger 8 and mail, and wmp11 but its open.
