right click on my computer > manage > device manager see any yellow ? or !

(i'm gonna place a wager that you'll see one next to the video card) go to the manufacturer's website and download the most current drivers for your video card (and any other devices that have question marks next to them)

Yes I see the yellow mark in:

-Other devices
-Sound
-Video
-Ethernet
-Modem PCI

All of the above have the yellow mark.

Also I noticed that I cannot enable the automatic updates for windows.

Unfortunately I'm not. That is another problem that I encountered after reformatting. The laptop does not recognise my router. By I do have internet access, as you can obviously notice, and a USB. Does that help?

PD. Many thanks for your help

i'm going to assume that you have a broadcom device (dell standard)
go here
http://support.dell....id=2966&libid=5 and download that to y our working machine and transfer and install on the not so working machine...once that's done you should be able to get online with that computer
once you can get online go here http://support.dell....&os=WW1&osl=EN# and download the drivers that are missing (the one's with the ? by them)

http://support.dell....3&fileid=118248 audio

http://support.dell....6&fileid=146526 video

(the following two depend on what kind of dialup modem is in the computer)
http://support.dell....d=2757&libid=20 connexant modem

http://support.dell....20&fileid=86563 broadcom modem

for the "other devices" right click on it withint computer management and choose update driver...then let it see if it can find the driver on microsoft's website
