direct connection's ALWAYS suck...there are too many variables that you yourself have to configure...i rarely have them work the way that i want them too...especially with internet connection sharing.....they just suck...From what you have said in your last couple of posts am I right in thinking that the direct cable connection is a lost cause in my case? If you feel we are wasting our time continuing then I'll accept this.
Is this type of connection normally such a problem - from my non technical view point it would seem to be the easiest - what could my problem be?.
with a properly configured router....everything we're trying to do right now....will be reduced to maybe a 5 step process..MAX...assuming that there is really nothing wrong with y our computers...That 'theoretically' is a bit worrying, can I assume that the setting up of a 2 PC network will be fairly straightforward
pretty much yeah...As I see it with a wireless set up I will have a modem/router (one box I guess) with a cable from it to my phone point, a USB 'Dongle' or even a PCI card in each PC which links to the router by (in effect) radio - Bluetooth .Any printers connect as they are now by cable to the PCs.
With this set up the PCs and any printers can all be networked also both PCs can connect to the web ?
youd go from the wall to the modem/router....then from the router ports to the computer (for wired) or wirelessly to whatever wireless device you choose for the computers (be that internal or external)..
once connected you would be able to setup the home network properly and share files and printers and all that jazz MUCH easier
