Too many programs listed at startup, system slowed

My windows takes 10 minutes to load before any program can be executed. I think there are too many programs being loaded at startup. Of course, I've tried to clean the "startup" menu and only having MSN and the clock left at the lower right hand corner of the screen. However, the system still takes forever to load. I have no idea how to "take things off" anymore, I know something is being loaded but I have no idea what. Can you advise how to lookup the list, disabled them? Any possible reasons?
