I recently got an old windows 98 computer I want to use as a Linux box ,but it only has one partition. What I want to do is to create another partition on the 12gb. hard drive without damaging windows or any of the windows files. This is important because I don't have the 98 install discs so I must keep all of 98 togeather while creating my Linux Partition. (is this possible) And I would really like it if someone could recremend a free utility to do the job I just described...

Depending on how much free space there is, it can be done. First you should defrag the disk and then back it up.

Many Linux distros come with the ability to resize a partition, such as parted, qtparted, gtparted. Sometimes you need to manually run the program, in other cases, such as Mandrake (Mandriva), it is an option as part of the install.

It is also possible to copy the Windoze install using Linux (been there, done that) and put it on another partition or back it up.

How much free space is available on the win98 partition? You need to make sure you have enough space first.

Ubuntu has a live CD, which you can try using and see if it has one of those partitioning programs. If not, you can download and make a CD to repartition it.

i tried a live cd already, i don't think it had that kind of program, where can i get a program that'll partition without hurting windows

about 11gb of 12 gb are free

Did you look for parted, qtparted or gtparted? It might have it. Knoppix comes with qtparted (Live CD).
