networking a mac w/ windows xp

I am trying to get a network setup between my windows xp machine and my wifes mac. Workgroup is set up on both machines. I can successfully ping the mac from the pc. I am unable to ping the pc from the mac. Both machines can ping the router that I am connected through (via cable modem). My goal is to share files and printers. However obviousely, I can't proceed until the computers can both communicate.
