Ok, i just slaved in an HDD (Maxtor 6E040L0) that suffered a crash making it unable to boot off of. However I decided to slave it in and recover information off of it, and use it as extra memory. But, XP and rainmeter say its unreadable and needs formatting; the hard drive is working fine (PCB registering on BIOS, humming indicating mechanical parts are fine). i was just wondering if the contents could be salvaged or, if I sould just format it.

Download and run the diagnostics program from Maxtor:

That should give you a better idea of what you need to do, whether the disk has a problem or if reformatting might help.
