I have been having a huge problem lately after something installed AZESEARCH on my computer. I have managed to delete this, at least to the point where it is no longer seen on my windows browser. But when I open websites, often I get taken to places that look like the original, such as Yahoo, but with many dead links where 'mail', 'news', etc are and instead given a number of p*** links. I have run Norton Virus which came up with nothing, CWShredder which identified 3 problems but I don't think fixed them (they keep coming up in repeated scans), AVG which showed a number of trojans embedded in rarely used programs which I immediatly deleted, and SpyBot. None of these have solved the problem. I work as a Volunteer in West Africa with no tech help available here. Any help will be appreaciated.

Sorry it takes me so long to respond, but with my job I'm traveling around a lot in rural W Africa and I don't often have internet access, which makes this hijacking of my system all the more frustrating. I removed Norton Antivirus, keeping AVG instead. All the rest of the steps you instructed I followed. Here is my latest log:

Hi Sean B,

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

1) First we use the program HOSTER that I had you download at the beginning. Unzip and run the program. You will be presented with a screen where you will find the following option:Restore Microsoft Original Hosts. Press it and Close the program.

2) Now let's do some work on your log:

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:

Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok
*All hidden files will now be visible

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
. Click the Config button located in the lower right hand corner of the HijackThis window.
. When the new screen opens, find and click the Miscellaneous Tools button.
. Then choose the Open Process Manager button.
. From the list of processes, hilight the following item then DELETE it by clicking the KILL button:

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.


Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them (if they are present):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\azesearch.ocx

FOLDERS (with all their content)

C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking
C:\Program Files\MyWay

Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

I ran through the list you gave you and carried out all the operations. From first glance, it seems as if it worked as Yahoo is no longer being hijacked. Do you know what could have caused this problem to begin with (and how to avoid having a repeat occurance in the future)? Anyways, if this works, you have helped me quite a bit. Thanks for your time. Hi SeanB,

Congratulations, your new log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the Performance tab, click File System, or press ALT+F.
3. On the Troubleshooting tab, click to clear the Disable System Restore check box.
4. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.

2. Another cleanup that will help is to go to Start>Programs>Acccessories>System Tools> Disk Cleanup and put a check mark beside all the entries in the disk cleanup window that ask you what you want to clean. Clean all hard drives and all files. This will get rid of any malware that is hiding in the temporary folders.

3. Make sure that all are gone, by checking the folders that the Temporary Internet Files and Temp files are stored in. To do so use Control Panel > Internet Options(or right click the IE icon on the desktop and choose Properties). Click Delete Files on the General Tab - place a check in the Delete all offline content box, then 'Clear History' and then press OK (or go direct to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofilename\Local Settings\Temp\ folder) and
C:\Documents and Settings\userprofilename\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\)

4. Empty your Recycle Bin

5. Double Check the following folders to make sure they are empty:
C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\your account\Temporary Internet Files
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp\ folder (or go direct to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofilename\Local Settings\Temp\ folder) and C:\Documents and Settings\userprofilename\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\)

6. You may find that you have to repeat the steps a couple of times.

7.Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.


Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

• IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
