Speakers and mic problem

My friend here is having a problem with his laptop; it seems that the sound card isn't letting his microphone work; rather what comes out is what he's hearing in his speakers. The sound card is a SigmaTel C-Major Audio. If more information is needed, please let me know. Thanks!

go to control panel
sounds and audio devices
double click
volume tab
advanced ,below place vol icon in taskbar check box,
go to options (top right)
properties
check recording
make sure mic is ticked
