waited till it was cool to the touch (yes I grounded myself before touching it). no change in status. will not fully load windows from the HD. but when the xp cd is in, says it cant repair because system has no HD. Hd is working well enough that I currently am running a full system scan in sade mode with spysweeper.

It runs in normal

It could need safe mode with networking so the CD Drives run

Tune Up runs in either normal or safe

in safe mode start > run typed in sfc /scannow and hit enter

a box that appeared empty popped up momentarily, then went away, thats it, nothing else happened that I could tell.

tried what you just said, got the following :

"Windows File Protection could not initiate a scan of protected system files.

The specific error code is 0x000006ba . [The RPC sever is unavailable]."

I tried this in safe mode with networking using the command prompt.

Click start then run, type services.msc then press enter, look through the list, there are two for RPC, the top one should be set to automatic start up and started, the second should be set to manual and started

Double click them to get the options, click set and apply if you change anything

yes , when I try to boot up into windows normally, it gets to the windows splash screen where the blue bubbles go across, and usually after the third pass, the screen goes black and all hd activity stops.
