For some reason, when I click on the IE icon, the browser won't open. The shortcut is pointing to the executable file located at "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE"

Any thoughts on why it won't open? I mostly use Firefox, but there are times when I want or need to use IE.

Any advice on this?

Install Firefox. LOL... All joking aside, open your Add/Remove programs and locate Microsoft Internet Explorer in the list. Left click on it to highlight it and then click on Add/Remove.

A small box should now pop up with an option to repair your installation. Click the repair radio button and click Ok. The computer will need to be restarted when the process is complete. Good luck!

I followed Keith's instructions (at the time his reply was the only one I saw) and I just finished running disc defragmenter.

Can I skip the final step (running sfc/scannow)? I am asking because the problem now seems to be solved.

By the way, just for the record, if you go back and read my first post, I did say "I mostly use Firefox, but there are times when I want or need to use IE.".

So I appreciate the advice about Firefox, but as you can see I already use it! Unfortunately, there are some sites that simply won't work with Firefox! A good example is CNN or Yahoo News. Neither of those sites allow me to play a video in Firefox.

Anyway, thanks Keith for your instructions. As I said, the problem is solved now. But again I ask - can I skip the final step?

Yes

sfc /scannow replaces missing system files

Could have been temp internet files which were dealt with by disc clean up

If you click tools, internet options, advanced, you can tick empty the temporary internet files folder when the browser is closed and click apply
