I have been having problems with my internet for awhile now. I started out in the networking forum. I got transfered to the malware forum. Now I was told to come here. I have a desktop with a dsl modem and a netgear router. My laptop has the wifi card in it. If i take the router out of the loop and plug the ethernet cord in my laptop, I get a limited or no connectivity message. With the wifi, we are getting about 19 kbps on both computers. I have tried unplugging my wifi card to see if it would speed up the desktop and it has done nothing, even in safe mode. Someone suggested the ethernet card could be fried and to try hooking up the modem via usb, we don't have the cd to install that and even if we did, the router doesn't have a port for usb. Any suggestions?

could you describe your physical setup? (how many computers, make and model of modem, router, etc...) are you prefering to have everything connected wired or wirelessly?

as a test of the modem....hook the ethernet cable from the modem into y our laptop...now shutdown the laptop....turn off and unplug the modem for about two minutes....turn it back on....once the modem is completely on (usually siginified by the lights stabalizing)...turn your laptop back on...once the laptop is on...do you have connectivity? if yes...or no...do start > run > cmd > ipconfig /all and post the results

We've got a dell dimension 4600 connected with a netgear mr814v2 router and an actiontec ed800t dsl modem. My laptop is a sony vaio pcg-frv25 and has a netgear ma401 wifi card.
With the ethernet plugged in, I still get no connection and here are the results:

hmm....looks like the laptop is not getting a dhcp address from the modem..why i don't know

on the laptop do start > run >services.msc
look for dhcp client and double click it....does it say that it's started or stopped? is it set to automatic or manual startup?

on the laptop...while it's plugged into the modem

right click my network places > properties > right click on the LAN connection > properties > highlight tcp/ip > properties > now click the button that says "use this ip address" and fill in the boxes with the following info

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.3
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

then put the following in the section for the dns server

DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

can you connect to the internet now?
