Just reformat over the partition and you will get rid of it and you can leave it or try to reisntall.

Did it automatically create a new parition? I didn't, it didn't ask for one and as far as I know there was no space for one.

Confirmed. No new partition. Vista files put into directory $windows~bt. BCD boot manager installed. It appears I need to get rid of BCD and get the machine to boot using boot.ini once again. Then I can just delete the $windows~bt directory.
BTW, the one time theSystem Recovery option came up on a Vista page, it generated an error.

To remove the boot loader, start your pc with recovery console using an xp cd and run
fixboot
have it overwrite the boot sector, and you will be back to boot.ini
