Hi tlen,

A cursory examination of your log has revealed that your system is suffering from a serious infection. There are three areas of concern that must be addressed before we start:

1) It appears that you are running 2 antivirus systems at the same time, Norton and McAfee. This is an unhealthy situation because one often interferes with the other. I must ask you to uninstall one of the two.

2) HijackThis needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself and the backups it creates are not accidentally deleted. You are already running HJT from your desktop so you don't have much work to do. Just Right click on your desktop, choose New >>Folder and name it HJT. Then drag (Copy) your current HijackThis.exe file into the folder.. You should end up with something like this: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\HJT\HijackThis.exe

3) I noticed that you are running SpySweeper which is an excellent program. However I need you to disable it or uninstall it during the fix because its built-in defences may not allow some of the necessary changes to take place.

4) Now, with all windows closed except for HJT , run HijackThis again, do a SCAN, produce a LOG and POST that log into this thread.

Regards,

Trevuren

Hi Trevuren Thank you so much for responding to me any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated. I uninstalled McAfee ,I disabled SpySweeper and I made a folder for HJT the problem is I cannot access that folder without freezing my system and the good old Dr Watson error appearing on the screen. I ran a new log and here it is. I hope that I did everything the right way. Again I really appreciate your knowledge and help.

Hi tlen,

The problem that we were trying to figure out was what happened to part of your log. The entries that went missing were essential to removing the infection the easiest way possible. Would you shed some light on that for me please?

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

This now has to be a 2 step approach. We will start by cleaning up most of your log leaving the biggies for step2.

Now let's do some work on your log:

We need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok
*All hidden files will now be visible
Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
*choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
*uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
*Close the window with ok
*All hidden files will now be visible

Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
. Click the Config button located in the lower right hand corner of the HijackThis window.
. When the new screen opens, find and click the Miscellaneous Tools button.
. Then choose the Open Process Manager button.
. From the list of processes, hilight the following items by clicking them if they are present, ONE AT A TIME, then DELETE them by clicking the KILL button:

C:\WINDOWS\crwv.exe
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\2005312235448_mcinfo.exe
d3tg.exe

Once all items have been KILLED, click the Back button which will return you to the HijackThis main window. Now place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A1BD0FEA-E869-CA1B-02CB-8C740277D910} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdkmu.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WildTangent CDA] RUNDLL32.exe "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0400.dll",cdaEngineMain
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msci] C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\2005312235448_mcinfo.exe /insfin
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [crwv.exe] C:\WINDOWS\crwv.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Photo Explosion Calendar Checker.lnk = ?
O23 - Service: Workstation NetLogon Service ( 6Q'8) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\d3tg.exe (file missing
)

Now with all the items selected and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window and Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them (if they are present):

FILES

C:\WINDOWS\crwv.exe
ALCXMNTR.EXE May be found in C:\ or C:\windows\ or C:\windows\system32
d3tg.exe My be found in C:\ or C:\Windows\ or C:\windows\system32

FOLDERS (with all their content)

C:\Program Files\WildTangent

Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Finally,RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everytjhing looks now.

Trevuren,
I have no idea what I have done to remove files. After posting my original log I continued to run all the programs that I downloaded(spysweeper adaware ect) and removed whatever it told me to. The wild tangent was removed partially a few months back when we were having a different computer problem. I am sorry if I have messed anything up further. Now I have a problem I can not get into my control panel at all to do the first part of the fix. Whenever I try to open it the Dr watson postmortem error appears and freezes everything. I can however get into my control panel in safe mode am I able to do what you have asked in the safe mode? Thank you I appreciate your help.

Hi tlen,

First, don't panic. Things get fixed with patience.

Second, please don't try to fix anything yourself or run any programs without direction. It does complicate the issue.

Third, keep on in Safe Mode and see if you can get me that log after the cleanup.

Regards,

Trevuren

Trevuren,

I did panic a bit I feel so lost with computers I admire your knowledge. I went ahead and tried everything in safe mode here is what I encountered

1)When you asked me to run HijackThis scan config and then delete processes I was unable to find any of those listed.

2) in the next part I was able to find all the items except 04-HKLM\..Run:[msci] C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\2005312235448_mcinfo.exe/insfin

3)I was unable to find d3tg.exe in the windows explorer

I rebooted back in to normal mode and ran a new HJT log. I did check to see if I could acess control panel and I am able to now but I did not touch anything! Please let me know if I need to repeat anything in normal mode now. Thank you very much. tlen

Hi tlen,

Remember when I suggested that you not panic when you lost half your log? Surprise, most of it is back and we are left with the most severe infection to deal with.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

First of all I need you to download some programs for use later. Do not run any of them until I tell you to do so.

Download cwsserviceremove and unzip it to your desktop

Download About:Buster from here. Once it is downloaded extract it to c:\aboutbuster and check for updates. Do NOT use it yet

Download CWShredder from here, install it, check for updates but again, don't use it yet.

Then, Download Ad-aware Second Edition here and install it. If you already have Ad-aware Second Edition skip to the next step.

Open adaware and Click the "Check for updates now" line on the main screen. CLick the "Connect" button on the webupdate screen.

If an update is available download it and install it. Click the "Finish" button to go back to the main screen.

Click on the "Settings" button (gear symbol in the upper right corner of the main status screen) in the quick launch toolbar to open the General settings screen. Check the "Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal" setting and then click "Proceed" to save your changes

Click the "Scan now" button in the main menu on the left side of the main status screen or use the "Start" button in lower right corner. This will open the Preparing System Scan screen. Please deselect "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat. Then select "Use custom scanning options" and click "CUstomize". This will open the "Scan Settings Page. Make sure all of the following are On with a "green" checkmark:

Scan within archives
Scan active processes
Scan Registry
Deep-scan Registry
Scan my IE Favorites for banned URLs
Scan my Hosts File

Then click on the "Tweak" Button to open up the tweak settings.

Open up the Scanning Engine section and make sure all of the following are On with a "green" checkmark:

Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Make sure the following is unchecked with a "red" X:

Unload recognized processes & modules during scan.

Open up the Cleaning Engine section and make sure all of the following are On with a "green" checkmark:

Always try to unload modules before deletion
During Removal, unload Explorer and IE if necessary
Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot.

Click the "Proceed" button to save settings.

Don't scan yet. We will do it in safe mode.

Ensure hidden files and folders are set to show;
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Next, go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok

Scroll down and find the service called Workstation NetLogon Service. When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.

Please disconnect from the Internet and unplug your modem for the duration of this fix You may want to print the rest of these instructions.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping F8 while booting up and continue for the rest of the fix in SAFE MODE

While in safe mode, double click on the cwsserviceemove.reg file you downloaded at the beginning. Grant it permission to add the registry items.

Then Open CWShredder that you downloaded in the first step. Close all browser windows and click on the fix/next button.

Bring up task manager Ctrl-Alt-Del and end these processes if they are present:

d3tg.exe

Now find and delete these files, if you can't find one then don't worry.. just move on to the next one.

xmejm.dll

Now run hijackthis and click the scan button, when it has finished scanning put a check against the following and click 'fix checked'

The following step is important as you may have several malware files in your temp directories.

Then browse to the C:\documents and settings\Your User Name (repeat for all other user names in documents and settings)\local settings\temp folder and delete all files and folders in it.
Then browse to the C:\Window\Temp folder and delete all files and folders in it.
Then in internet explore click tools>internet Options>General. Click on Delete Files make sure you get all offline content as well.

Now navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on aboutbuster.exe When the tool is open press the OK button, then the Start button, then the OK button, and then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so. Post the log file in your next reply.

Scan with Adaware by opening it and clicking the "Next" button to start the scan.

When the scan is completed the Performing System Scan screen will change name to "Scan Complete".

Click the "Next" button to get to the Scanning Results screens where more information about the objects detected during the scan is available.

Click the Critical Objects Tab. In general all of the items listed will be bad. Be carefull with the Hosts file entries. Malware uses the hosts file to redirect you websites. However you can use the hosts file as a way to prevent malware. If the object has 127.0.0.1 in it, it should most likely not be deleted as it is protecting against unwanted sites. For more information on how to use a host file to protect yourself read here. So in short, you may or may not want to fix the hosts file entries.

To fix all the bad critical objects do the following:

Right click on one of them to open up the selection screen. Click the "Select All" button to select all entries. In general all should be selected with the exception of the good hosts file entries.

When all are selected Click "Next" and then "OK" in the pop-up window to confirm the removal.

Now REBOOT, and run hijackthis again and post a fresh log along with the about buster log.

Regards,

Trevuren

Hi Trevuren,
Ok here goes I followed everything you asked. When I ran CWShredder and brought up the task manager I was unable to find either d3tg.exe or xmejm.dll.
I then ran the hijack this and was unable to find any of the following

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\xmejm.dll/sp.html#10213
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\xmejm.dll/sp.html#10213
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\xmejm.dll/sp.html#10213
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\xmejm.dll/sp.html#10213
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\xmejm.dll/sp.html#10213
O23 - Service: Workstation NetLogon Service ( 6Q'8) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\d3tg.exe (file missing)

I continued on and finished everything else here are my aboutbuster log and last HJT log. I hope that everything is coming along in the right direction. Thank you again for all your hard work.

Hi tlen,

Well done, it looks as if things are going according to plan. You have been doing a very good job.

Now we need to see if we need to restore some deleted files:
Please check for the following files using the Windows Search:

Go START>>SEARCH>>FOR FILES OR FOLDERS>>>ALL FILES OR FOLDERS>>ALL OR PART OF THE FILE NAME

control.exe
rundll32.exe
wmplayer.exe
msconfig.exe
notepad.exe
shell.dll
SDHelper.dll

If any are missing or not working properly then you can download new copies from Merijn's Files and follow the instructions at that site to install them where they belong for your OS.

Run an online antivirus scan at:

Trend Micro

Reboot

Finally, scan again with HijackThis once more and post your logfile just to make sure that there is nothing left to fix. I do expect one little change at the end.

Regards,

Trevuren

Hi Trevuren,

This is going to be a silly question and probably very easy but where do I find the windows search engine? Is that windows explorer? Also I am sure it was just a misprint but your reply was addressed to paintisnhere are the instructions following for me or them? I have done so well so far I dont want to mess up now! Thank you again for everything.

Hi tlen,

Remember, in this business there are no silly questions.

1) You were right to question the name. We work on so many files at once that errors do occur and you wouldn't want to be doing fixes on your computer that were designed for another victim.

2)Search Engine is another way of calling Windows Search Function that you can access through the START button. Our fixes come from all over the world and sometimes we don't quite use the same terms.

3) If you go back to my last post, you will see that I have already edited it accordingly.

Regards,

Trevuren

Hi Trevuren,

Trend Micro will not allow me to run a scan saying that only internet explorer browser is supported. I dont understand why it will not let me run the scan. :tazz: I am connecting with my DSL like normal and using the internet explorer icon on my desktop. Should I try a diiferent one? I restored one program SDHelper.dll from the site listed. If you want me to skip the online scan and run the HJT please let me know. Thank you
