Hi tlen,

I am glad that you were able to run that online Antivirus. Eventhough my system is well protected, I run one myself at least once a month just for safety reasons.

The virus that panda picked up are probably in your system restore cache and will reinfect your system if you ever avail yourself of this feature. So we are going to do 3 things today (By the way, your system looks pretty good).

1) Disable then Enable System Restore in Windows XP

This will remove all previous restore points but we have no choice. The infection must be totally eradicated from your system

To Disable System Restore

. Right click on "My Computer"
. Left click on "Properties"
. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
. Left click on "Apply"
. Confirmation box appears: answer "YES"


To Enable System Restore

. Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
. Click on "Apply"

2) Click HERE to download System Security Suite. Extract it from the zip file into a folder and doubleclick on sss.exe. Check the boxes under the 'Items to Clear' tab and click 'Clear Selected Items'. Reboot when prompted. This will empty all the temporary held stuff including anything bad.

3) Uninstall the program "Broadjump" through Add/Remove programs then delete the whole Broadjump Folder through Windows Explorer.

4) Finally, send me an updated HJT log for a "last" review"

Ok I did everything as stated and here is my HJT log. I have a few questions when the system was rebooting a runner error invalid Backweb application id "1940576" came up and also Spysweeper came up with 2 messages of things found

Hey tlen, Guess What??? (What you did and thought were probably correct)

Congratulations, your new log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean: DO THEM PLEASE

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Another cleanup that will help is to go to Start>Programs>Acccessories>System Tools> Disk Cleanup and put a check mark beside all the entries in the disk cleanup window that ask you what you want to clean. Clean all hard drives and all files. This will get rid of any malware that is hiding in the temporary folders.

3. Make sure that all are gone, by checking the folders that the Temporary Internet Files and Temp files are stored in. To do so use Control Panel > Internet Options(or right click the IE icon on the desktop and choose Properties). Click Delete Files on the General Tab - place a check in the Delete all offline content box, then 'Clear History' and then press OK (or go direct to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofilename\Local Settings\Temp\ folder) and
C:\Documents and Settings\userprofilename\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\)

4. Empty your Recycle Bin

5. Double Check the following folders to make sure they are empty:
C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\your account\Temporary Internet Files
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp\ folder (or go direct to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofilename\Local Settings\Temp\ folder) and C:\Documents and Settings\userprofilename\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\)

6. You may find that you have to repeat the steps a couple of times.

7.Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.


Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

• IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

I am sorry to bother you again but this morning dr watson shut me down again. This time it was different because after the error occurred and I rebooted I was able to go into my files with out them freezing up. I havent been online since our last contact yesterday and I have been going through all of the recommendations you listed several times. Do you think that this was just a fluke thing since I was still able to acess the folders? I have been running all the programs and it seems I am clean can you please take one last look at a HJT log. Also can you direct me to what forum I can go to with this problem--I think I turned something off by mistake because I am not getting any pictures or banners on any websites just boxes with a red x in it. I am sorry.

Your log is still as clean as a whistle. No bugware present.

As far as your pictures go (the ones replaced by an X) that is a security setting that you recently enabled. Maybe as part of the "All Clean" recommendations" from yesterday. Go over those again and read very carefully what all the check marks are actually doing. Some may say to limit graphics?

I have a lot of those on mine because I prefer a faster data transfer time. I really don't want pictures.

Your computer isn't broken, it may need a little help, that's all.

I have a quick question for you. When I try to open certain folders the dr watson error comes up but does not freeze me like it did before. I was in the c drive under owner local settings and the temp folder and it has 2 files in it that it will not let me delete in any way. It states that another person or program is using the files. Are these codes something that you recognize? I tried to close everything and then delete but it will not work.

Click HERE to download System Security Suite. Extract it from the zip file into a folder and doubleclick on sss.exe. Check the boxes under the 'Items to Clear' tab and click 'Clear Selected Items'. Reboot when prompted.

I think that I may just have to deal with it. I did the sytem security suite and it didn't get rid of it. Anytime I click on that temp folder it shuts me down so I think it must be connected to dr watson. There seems to be no way to delete it. I hope that it will not take over the system again, as long as it stays in that folder I wont bother it if it doesnt bother with me. Again thanks for your help.
