recovering excel file

My wife had her mother helping her in the office today and she worked on an excel file, but didn't save it. She left the laptop running and left long enough that it went to stand by. When she started up again, the file would not respond. Shut down laptop hoping file would recover, but it did not. Is the file gone? How do we find it? Thanks!
