disconnect all usb devices
start > run
devmgmt.msc
<enter>
scroll down to Universal Serial Bus Controllers, expand the selection, right click each device and choose uninstall
Reboot.
Let windows start up as normal and it will redetect the usb controllers. It will take a little bit of time. Wait until it is done and then plug in a device

Hey, thanks for the reply but i already tried uninstalling, then shutting down and turning the computer back on, the computer then detected and installed everything on it's own, but the usb ports still do not work. Any more ideas would be appreciated.

Quick thought, could our Logitech Webcam have any part in this?

try this
start > run
cmd
<enter>
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
cd \windows\System32 (note space)
start devmgmt.msc
go to VIEW > Show Hidden devices
Now expand USB devices
anything grey there?
Expand each category and right click and choose UNINSTALL on anything grey
start > run
cmd
<enter>
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
cd \windows\System32 (note space)
start devmgmt.msc
go to VIEW > Show Hidden devices

There were a few grey ones, so i uninstalled them and rebooted but the usb ports still don't work.

well,, it is possible that the usb ports have simply died--especially on an older system
Do you have a windows xp cd? If it were me, I would install a temp parrallel OS and see if they work there.
Also, start > run
regedit
<enter>
navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB
also check
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USBSTOR
A lot of keys there? Do these ports work with anything at all, or just not mp3 players?

They don't work with anything. What do you mean by "alot of keys there"? I will look to see if we have the CD.
