Slow MS Word

Whenever I want to use MS Word the programme takes about 20/30 seconds to become operative, First the cursor is a short vertical line which eventually becomes an hourglass. Eventually I am able to type to the screen. Does any one have any tips to offer please.

does this occur in a different profile (if you log into your pc with a different user account?)

start > run
winword.exe /a
<enter>

does it open quickly?
