MSI Installer and OS errors

I have been having issues for a while but now my sytem seems to have gone slightly haywire now. I tried to install visual studio express and that was where my problems started. Anytime i now try to install a program that requires MSI Installer it tells me another installation is in progress. Intermittently explorer.exe will crash when i am trying to browse the system and i cannot use 'Start', 'Search', 'Files or Folders' as when i click this nothing happens, the same is also true when i try to use the 'Help and Support' function of Windows XP. I have attached a HiJack This log if this helps.
