HI. I just got my Windows XP a few weeks ago. I keep getting this pop up in the sys-tray that tells me "4 days for windows to activate". It is on a count down.

Now when I checked into it ....it tells me...."Windows is Activated."

Can you help me with this please? I am baffled and I don't want to lose anything.

Thank-you so much for your time.

Renee.

Hi Renee,
you won't lose anything,

Fom MS:Activate Windows XP Right Away

If you have not activated Windows XP, you will be reminded each time you log in and at common intervals until the end of the activation grace period of 30 days. If you have not activated Windows XP within this timeframe, you will need to do so to continue using it.

go to start/all programs/accessories/system tools/activate windows

if that is OK give Microsoft support a call or check Activation

HI. Thank-you for your reply. Okay..I did what you said....

"go to start/all programs/accessories/system tools/activate windows"

This is the response I get....

Windows is already activated. Click OK to exit![u]

Do I just ignore this...today it is saying...I have 3 days left......

Go to this Microsoft Knowledge Base article and download the file it has there. It should fix your problem.

That article also has a manual walk through. If you feel comfortable doing that, it is worth a shot.

HI Thank-you to both of you for your help and quick replies.

Okay...I don't feel comfortable doing this on my own. If possible could I please get one of you to guide me through it.

Thanks so much.

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.

3. In the left pane, locate and then click the following registry key:

To locate the key, click the + next to each of these until you see WPAEvents and left click it

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents

4. In the right pane, right-click OOBETimer, and then click Modify.

5. Change at least one digit of this value to deactivate Windows.

6. Click Start, and then click Run.

7. In the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK.

%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a

8. Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows, and then click Next.

9. Click Change Product key.

10. Enter your product key into the boxes

If you are returned to the previous window, click Remind me later, and then restart the computer.

11. Repeat steps 6 and 7 to verify that Windows is activated. You receive the following message:

Windows is already activated. Click OK to exit.

12. Click OK.

It is a 25 digit alpha-numeric code which should be on a sticker on the PC tower, or on the CD case, do not proceed with this until you are sure you have it
