Cannot connect to internet with laptop on XP. Tried both cable (at home) and a DSL model (in a hotel). I experienced intermittant connection with both and would immediately drop off line in about 15 seconds when connection made. This started when I changed ISPs and initially tried to do a windows update. Froze and has been generally non working since (about a month ago).

Have tried ipconfig/renew multiple times no joy
ping usually times out to yahoo.com or google.com
I get 0.0.0.0 IP address and sometimes a 169.254 dead address
Different cat-5 cables
Different ISPs
Different modems used
Repair results in 'failed renew address..." message

I ran all of the initial procedures prior to hjt log generation
adaware clean (but old)
ewidos clean
winsockfix no joy
uninstalled ethernet card numerous times via device manager. 15 second joy 2 of 5 times but usually still unresponsive.

Using desktop to post which works fine with home ISP and cable modem.
stumped but suspicious, thanks in advance for assist
