hello again!

i'm having a problem with my desktop computer's LAN/ethernet connection.

i used to have an ADSL modem/router for my internet connection, which worked fine with my ethernet port. it broke a little while ago, and so i've been using an old DSL USB modem for a while (i mention this because it used to work, but to show that i haven't tested it for a while). I just got a new modem/router but i can't seem to connect to it. the ethernet lights come on on the PC and on the modem/router, but it constantly says connection refused when i try to connect to the router's IP address.
I thought it might be the modem, but I can connect to it with no problems using the same CAT5 cable plugged into the ethernet port on my laptop, or by wireless on my laptop.

the only other way i could think of testing it, was to connect my laptop to my desktop using a CAT5 crossover cable that i had. this doesn't work. on the laptop, i get a 'limited or no connectivity' error message. if i look at the status of the LAN connection on the laptop, it says unable to obtain IP address. to be honest though, i'm no expert and i'm just trying things that may have worked in the past. i've tried repair connection, when plugged into the modem/router; which fails. but also from the laptop when connected to the desktop on a crossover which fails (this time, it works from the desktop end!)

it seems to me as though the problem must be on the desktop computer's end, either physically to do with the port, or some kind of configuration issue. again being honest, i'm lost for what to do.

help fixing this would be very much appreciated!

with the desktop connected to the modem/router....turn off the desktop...and turn off the modem....leave them off for a few minuts...then turn the modem on...let it come all the way up...not turn your dekstop back on

okiedokie....your desktop doesn't seem to be getting an ip address from the modem/router....can you uninstall the usb modem that you had installed (right click my computer > manage > device manager > find the modem > right click > uninstall) just to make sure it's not conflicting...then connect your laptop to the router/modem and do the ipconfig /all jazz on it (you don't need to turn off the modem or the laptop for this one)

done. did you mean the desktop or the laptop? i did both anyway.
the laptop connects fine.
the desktop has the USB modem on it, so i uninstalled that, then connected it to the modem/router and did the ipconfig on it.
i'll try and connect the laptop to the USB modem now, and post those, but here's the desktop results:

well..you don't actually need the usb modem right? that was just a temporary thing correct?

yes, that is right, it's temporary. but that's my only way of connecting to the internet at the moment it seems!

this new modem/router is a ADSL2+ modem as part of a welcome package for my new ISP. it is supposed to be backward compatible for ADSL but i haven't figured out how to connect using it yet! (instructions? pah! what instruction manual?!?)

they haven't connected my line up to the new ISP yet (my old one still seems to work), so my old USB modem is doing the business for me at the moment. soon though, that won't work either! so hopeully i'll be able to get this fixed before then.

i ended up saving the laptop results to a flash drive, rather than installing the USB modem on there (it was asking for a disk and stuff). i've had to reinstall it on my desktop to be able to connect to the web to post all this stuff. but uninstalling it again is no hassle if you want me to do anything else.

ah...well there's the deal....(in theory).. they new modem/router came from the NEW isp correct? it may be configured for their setup...they have to activate these kinds of things (in theory)...so..

you had an old ISP (from whom you got dsl) they gave you a modem/router that died...so you used a usb modem instead.. and now you're switching isps...the new isp has not turned your connection on yet correct?

the new modem/router came from the new ISP: correct.

the old modem/router that broke, i bought myself and configured it for use with my old ISP. (rather than take a modem from them)
i'm switching ISPs, but they haven't connected yet. i'm still running with my old ISP using a USB modem.

problem is, even though it's not connected to the internet, i can't even connect to the new router from my desktop.
even without the new box connected to the net, I can connect to it from my laptop by CAT5 or by wireless to access settings etc., no problem. i just don't understand why i can't do the same from my desktop.

even without the net connection, i should be able to connect to this box, and even in theory use it as a router to switch traffic between my desktop and laptop when they're both connected to it.

to get you to connect the desktop to the router/modem..let's see what we can do

connect the desktop to the new router/modem
now right click on "my network places" and choose properties > right click on your LAN connection > properties > highlight tcp/ip and choose properties...then enter the info bellow

we are getting somewhere though! from the modem/router's config screen (i'm connected to it wirelessly from my laptop) i can see 'Unknown-[my MAC address]' connected to ethport1 of the modem/router!
where my laptop comes up with it's name: ZPOONZ-LAP, this comes up with that 'Unknown-[my MAC address]' instead of it's name: ZPOONZ-DESK

hmmm....with the desktop still connected to the modem router...go back to the tcp/ip properties and switch both sections back to automatic.. now do
start > run > cmd > ipconfig /release
then
start > run > cmd > ipconfig /renew

report the results
