Hello again Renee

I see nothing wrong in the HJT log, so I am wondering if this is a corrupt MSIE.

Go into your Control Panel and then to Add and Remove Programs. Click Change or Remove Programs and scroll to Microsoft Internet Explorer, click to highlight it, choose remove and a new window will open giving you the option to repair Internet Explorer and finally click OK.

Did that help?

Hello again Renee

This all sounds very weird and I am now scratching my beard in desperation having reviewed all the posts thus far.

Let's scan for a rootkit, although it doesn't sound as lively as rootkits normally are.

Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop:
  • Double-click blbeta.exe
  • Accept the agreement and click NEXT
  • In the following window. Click SCAN
You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).

Copy and paste this log in your next reply. Don't proceed with step #2 or choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

Take your time, I'm off to bed right now as it is 1.00 am Saturday here.

Hello again Renee

We best check your account for admin rights first of all. Please open the Control Panel and go to User Acounts. You will see all accounts on this PC, I have assumed that yours is the only account and that it has admin rights, if this is not correct please tell me, but make your account have admin rights now.

If my assumption was correct and that your account already had admin rights and no other accounts has admin rights, try this:

Go to START>RUN> and then cut and paste in the line below (it is just one long line), then hit enter and wait until it finishes. It will appear to be doing nothing at all, but be patient and just wait until it finishes.

Here's the text:

%SystemRoot%\System32\SECEDIT.EXE /configure /cfg %systemroot%\repair\secsetup.inf /db %SystemRoot%\Security\Database\secsetup.sdb /verbose

Reboot normally

Now try Blacklight again.

Are you getting the error message still?

Hello again and thank you when i run this line i get this error msg

Windows cannot find C:\WINDOWS\System32\SECEDIT.EXE. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Star botton, and then click Search

the script doesnt run at all just get that msg
Also new Info i talked ot my son today and he told me about 2 months before i got computer he ran spy sweeper and didnt look which things it suggested he block with shields and one was part of MSIE and that si why it never opened again, no idea if that has something to do with this. I am the only user on my computer and i have admin rights

I would also like to say i understand this is moving away from a internet threat and more towards a software problem, So i fully understand if i will need to find a fix that way.
thank you again!

Hello again

Your son could be right and I too recognise that we are moving away from malware issues. I was going to suggest that you download a fresh MSIE and get rid of the old one and install the new version 7.0.

Anyway, let's try and scan for a rootkit just to be sure.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter. It will process then start. Your desktop and icons will disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, it will be ready for a reboot. Press any key to reboot. After the reboot notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread.

That should have set the sedebugprivileges.

Now try Blacklight again.

Hello again Renee

Here's a link for MSIE 6.0 using Firefox:

http://www.tucows.co...t/193778_118217

You may also wish to use it afterwards to upgrade your Windows to SP2, which may stop the pop-ups.

Please report back so I can plan the next step.

Hello again

MSIE normally hangs out at C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer.

If you deleted the whole folder (I prefer uninstalling normally) and then used search to find any traces of Internet Explorer and deleting them too, I reckon you could use Ccleaner > Issues > Scan for Issues > Fix Selected Issues and then re-install MSIE.

Reformats are a lot of work I think and mostly unnecessary. We are not at that point yet.
