The full error reads:

EPSON Smart Panel: SmaPanel.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x7c9106c3" referenced memory at "0x1001d566". The memory could not be "written".

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

Clicking OK successfully terminates the program, and CANCEL does not debug the program. I'm attempting to use my Epson Stylus Photo RX500 scanner. This is one of those print/copy/scan printers. This has performed fantastically for me until a month and a half ago. I uninstalled the software, then cleaned up and defragged the HD. Then I reinstalled the software, but it did not help. Now, I do not have a system restore point far enough back to get this to cooperate. Here is the HijackThis log. I don't know if it will help, but I'm desperate at this point. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

go to control panel, admin tool, event log. look through there for any red or yellow entries under system and application. Pay attention to times that correspond when you launch the application.
