I have just built a new PC.
ASUS VIA KT600 MB
Athlon XP 2000+
1 GB RAM
2 80 GB WD HD in RAID0 config
XFX nVidia 6600 GT Video

I originally had a 3200+ processor and I could not boot with the internal cache enabled. I swapped the processor for the 2000+ and it was running fine except that it would shut down unexpectedly. I decided to re-install the OS because it was installed with the bad processor. Now as soon as all of the drivers are loaded the computer shuts down. I mean that it is like someone pulled the plug. It will not turn back on unless I turn off the switch on the back of the power supply. I have built several other computers, but this is the first AMD system. I know a lot of people who rave about AMD, so far I am not impressed. I would appreciate any help that I can get. Thanks.

Do you mean XP does not finish installing/loading its drivers or drivers you are installing for add on components?

Usually when XP won't fully install it is bad ram check the ram with memtest86, use the floppy version so you won't need the os installed.

But in this case with what you describe I think its a bad psu, when you have to turn off the switch in the back and turn it on again to make it boot you are resetting the psu. This is caused by overloading it and under normal use this don't happen unless it is way to small for the system or is bad.

I would try a different psu first then memtest.

No, I meant that XP finishes loading all of the drivers and when it says that it is starting windows, then it shuts down.

I have tested the memory by pulling one DIMM and then the other one. I get the error with either one in, so I think the memory is OK.

The PSU is 550W, so I don't think that there is any way that it could be too small. I suppose it could be bad. I will get a new one and try it out.

No way its to small but I had to put that in cause I have seen people try and use 300w on amd systems and that don't work out to good. It is acting like it is faulty though and there is no good way to test for that because it is random.

I would memtest each stick of ram before buying a new psu just in case, would not want you to waste your hard earned cash.

I ran memtest and the computer shutdown every time it hit test 5. So I bought new RAM that was tested with my motherboard and it still did the same thing. Then I bought a new power supply and still have the same problem with it. I don't know where to go from here. The only other thing that I can think of is that the motherboard itself is bad. I have replaced the CPU, RAM & power supply. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Try and clear the cmos then go into bios and load something like fail safe defaults, there something not right with the ram settings.

Up the NB voltage a notch
You should also try uping the vdimm a notch and/or raising the ram timings

Check the ram clock and manually set it to 133mhz.
Check the cpu clock/ fsb make sure it is set to 133mhz

What core is the processor? if its a thorton set the vcore to 1.60
if its a thoroughbred set the vcore to 1.65
if its a palomino set vcore to 1.75.

What if your problem is not internal (this may seem stupid and obvious, and you may have already done this) Boot using a CD. What if your comp is shutting down because there was an error in the installation that did not surface during the install. This happened to me when i built mine (although mine was intel so this may not be the issue)

Im having close to the same problem mine says 1500+ when it should say 2700+ its says its running in safe speed due to improper shutdown. I tried to do the mem test but pc shuts down before i can complete the test . when i try to load win xp it goes as far as loadind drivers and such then it gets stuck on "setup is now starting windows"I can hear a chang of fan speed right before it shuts down. Any ideas?

Could you list your voltages, 3.3v 5v and 12v in bios.

It could be the psu (power supply) when you here the fan change its possible one of the fans or all loose power indicating the 12v rail is weak causing the shut down, we maybe able to tell more when you list the voltages.
