[COLOR=blue]Dell 8100 P4 / 1.3 GHz / 256 MB / Win 2000 Pro

My computer was initially quite speedy (for about 2 years), but has been operating very slowly for some time now (about 1 year). However, the problems increased substantially about 2 weeks ago.

It has been used principally by my 14-year old for the last 6 months. So, perhaps he has invited some particularly insideous spyware recently. Lots of pop-ups, and some times using IE6 is non functional. I am posting this from my other machine.

I have run Ad-aware, Spy-Bot, CWShredder periodically on the 8100 for more than a year. Ad-aware runs notably slower than on my newer machine. Yesterday, I discovered that there were about 650 *.tmp or *.dmp files. I have deleted these files, then re-ran the three programs above. It was faster for about one or two visits to the web. Now, it's mostly useless for using IE6.

I just found your web site and ran HijackThis on the 8100. Can you help me identify which of the items noted by HijackThis are problematic? the HT log is below:

Oh my you have an interesting collection!

Lets start out with some general scans to see if we cant clean that log up a little before we go after it manually.

Please run an on-line virus scan at TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

Please download Spybot Search & Destroy and AdAware.

Follow all the instructions on this website to run a scan with both of these softwares.

After those scans, please reboot and post a fresh HiJackThis log and we will continue from there.

Did the following in response to ScHwErV's post:

1) Ran on-line virus scan using TrendMicro link provided. I couldn't figure out how to export the results to a file, so I have typed them herein. It ran for more than 2 hours before ANY files were scanned. Then a window announced that HouseCall had cleaned the following malware: TROJ_WINTRIM.W, TROJ_AGENT-1, and TROJ_BDI.A

After this window was acknowledged, the scanning began. More than 7 hours later (total more than 9 hours), HouseCall had scanned 32,000+ files with one additional malware (TROJ_ISTBAR.E) detected. However, because it was not finished, it did not clean this malware before an IE6 pop-up froze system and caused re-boot.

After re-booting, I re-ran the TrendMicro routine. This time, HouseCall scanned all 45,685+ files in just a few minutes and found the following six malware:
TROJ_ISTBAR.E (Not Cleanable; but it later deleted it)
TROJ_LOADER.C (Can Not Access; did not delete - currently in use)
TROJ_LOADER.D (Can Not Access; did not delete - currently in use)
TROJ_WINTRIM.AM (Not Cleanable; but it later deleted it)
TROJ_SMALL.QN (Not Cleanable; but it later deleted it)
TROJ_BISPY.B (Can Not Access; did not delete - currently in use)

I already had SpyBot and Ad-Aware on the system, but checked for updates for both. There were no updates available for either; I ran both per instructions in ScHwErV's post. Results for the Ad-Aware run are attached.

I then re-booted and re-ran HiJackThis; log is attached.

How do we continue from here?

By the way, after doing all of this, the system appears to function tolerably well, but it still sounds suspect. The computer is sitting here right now with the hard drive going crazy, as usual, but doing nothing I requested.

Looking better already. Lets take a peek at another log. You do have some random malware in your log, but lets wait and get everything in one shot.

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Excellent. Lets get started.

Please uninstall the following programs from the Add/Remove Programs applet in your Control Panel.

MediaLoads
InstaFinder
HyperLinker
Ebates Moe Money Maker
Enhanced MediaLoads
Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)
Viewpoint Media Player
Win32 BI Application
win32_i
Spybot S&D 1.2 <== Newer version available

After that, lets run a few more general scans and see if we can clean you up.

Please download Spybot Search & Destroy and AdAware.

Follow all the instructions on this website to run a scan with both of these softwares.

Please run an on-line virus scan at TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

After that, reboot and post a fresh HiJackThis log.

All requested tasks completed. After uninstalling / removing all requested entities, I re-booted before downloading the newer version of SpyBot S&D.

After installing SpyBot S&D, but before I could run the program, the computer re-booted itself without instructions to do so. Just before it re-booted, a window flashed for just an instant. I couldn't read it all but it had something to do with "Ebates Moe Money Maker."

In SpyBot S&D, I ran Immunize. Results said "471 bad products blocked, 1155 additional protections possible. Re-immunize." I re-immunized 3 additional times with the same results. Spybot found and fixed 62 problems. 1155 potential protections still possible afterward.

TrendMicro's HousCall inspected 45,727 files and found the following four viruses:

TROJ_AGENT.AAB (Not Cleanable; but it later deleted it)
TROJ_AGENT.AAB (Not Cleanable; but it later deleted it) [different location?]
TROJ_AGENT.AAB (Can Not Access; did not delete - currently in use)
TROJ_LOADER.C (Can Not Access; did not delete - currently in use)

The *.AAB virus not cleaned is attached to C:\WINNT\system32\cbzsen.exe
The *.C virus not cleaned is attached to C:\WINNT\system32\csrbpupd.exe

New HiJackThis log is attached.

NOTES:

In case it's related... While completing these tasks, the following window popped up twice: "Windows Virtual Memory Too Low" and said that the size of the virtual memory paging file was being increased. Have received this window two other times in the last 3 weeks.

I still get lots of pop-up windows. I noticed this morning that two new icons are now on my desktop: VIRUS HUNTER was created 2 days ago; KILL WARE was created today while SpyBot S&D was running.

You forgot to attach your HJT log!

You can either attach it, or just copy the contents of the log here. Either way will work, but I will need to see that to continue.

I attached the log to the message twice. However, it appears that if you preview your message, it deletes your attachments. Here it is again, sorry for the mix-up.

Still nothing attached. Try just copying the log into the reply window. Open the HJT log and click Ctrl and A which will select all. Then past it into the reply window.

I see no file is attached again on the last post. I attached it twice again. I also tried several times to attach the file for this post. It won't accept an attachment. I'm doing it the same way I attached the previous files...

Here is the text of the HJT file:

Click here to download Pocket Killbox by Option^Explicit. Extract it from the zip file then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Place the following lines (complete paths) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox, and click the red button with the white X on it after each. Keep track of any files it tells you either could not be found or could not be deleted, as you'll need those later:

C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\
C:\WINNT\dlmax.dll
C:\WINNT\systb.dll
C:\WINNT\isrvs
C:\WINNT\farmmext.exe
C:\WINNT\wupdt.exe

For the files that it either couldn't find or couldn't delete, in the killbox again this time, put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot". Copy and paste each file into the file name box, then click the red button with the X after each. It will ask you if you want to reboot each time you click it, answer NO until after you've pasted the last file name, at which time you should answer Yes.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

After that, reboot into safe mode and check all the entries in HJT that I asked you to check before. Some of them came back.

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Done.

Of six files you noted, the first four could not be deleted and the las two could not be found. Then, I had each deleted on re-boot. Thenm, went into Safe Mode and found several files previously requested for deletetion and marked them for deletion and deleted them. Then, rebooted and ran a new HJT scan; the new log is attached.
