Newsgroups problem in Evolution

Am using Ubuntu 6.06 and trying to use Evolution as a news reader.

When I refresh the list of newsgroups, it lists everything alphabetically up to "Symantec" and then just spins its wheels and eventually stops. I can subscribe any of the groups listed, but the ones I want start with W so they are unavailable.

Very strange. Has anyone seen similar behaviour?

I had it working, then reformatted/repartitioned/reinstalled, and now it shows this problem, so I have no idea what could be different.

The news server is news.wp.shawcable.net.
