Safe mode...or just me

I'm new here...I don't know much about computers but I do know that i cannot get onto my laptop. It's about 2 years old now. It's a gateway. It was Windows XP and I can't even get to the part where I could possibly put it in safe mode. I tried the F8 thing. It didn't work. I can't get past a screen....I'm not sure what it is but it looks like it's trying to boot but it just wont. it says
"PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable"
"PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent."
"Operating System not found"

And it stays on that screen. It doesn't do anything else. And if I hit a button all it does is reboot the same screen over and over. If anyone could possibly help me....Please. I'm desperate right now. I need it. Thank you very much.
