In the end, since the operating system would not boot to a point where I could get in and rename this file (gagp30kx.sys), I was forced to go back to the original restore point and re-load all the windows, HP, etc updates since my original restore point. This time I have created recovery disks and a new restore point, I renamed the file which was quickly restored by the operating system. I am not confident going forward that this problem will not occur again but next time I may have some options....................................rcs2007

I had the same exact problem and the way i fixed it is this one:

I put my hard disk in other working computer and in the booting process the chdsk option came up; it checked the disk for consistency and fixed bad clusters and other staff by itself,
Took it out, put it back in my computer and everything worked fine!

I don't know why it happened but i guess is not the driver, not in my case!]

I haven't figured out how to fix this yet, but I'm having the same problem. I DO however know that if I disconnect the card reader from the USB header on the motherboard the system boots fine. I've booted without it plugged in and then plugged it in and windows says it's an unknown device. I think a windows update might have done something to a driver or something somewhere that caused the whole mess because I think it works after doing a system restore.

I'm still investigating and will post if I find out more.

I had the exact same symptoms. This fixed the problem for me:

I did the following to make it easier:

1. I removed my laptop hard drive and put it in my external USB case
2. I accessed it on another laptop and backed up the data I cared about.
3. I ran check disk which found and fixed errors (I tried again after this and it did not fix the problem)
4. I ran defrag on the disk but after about 4 hours I gave up and canceled it.
5. I went through the manual restore steps in the KB article linked above, but instead of doing it on the problem laptop, I just backed, renamed and copied the files over on the disk directly, accessing it with my good laptop.
6. I installed the hard drive back into the problem laptop and it loaded
7. I then saved a restore point to be sure I had this state saved
8. I then restored the last restore point which was about a week old

And... It worked!!! I couldn't believe it. I was set to by another laptop tomorrow and now I don't have to.

I created an account here just to leave this post. I hope this info helps someone in the future.

I was having this exact same problem.

I think it was finally solved by either

(1) removing the second hard disk
(2) moving the files c:\windows\repair to c:\windows\system32\config

I swear it might be the second drive thing ! (it's so simple try it first).

This is a weird problem. Very frustrating to use Windows PCs that just "blow up" and can't be fixed.

Hello everyone!

I created an account here just to leave this post.

First of all thanks for everyone who posted here, it was very helpull, and beside of this i would like to share my experience. Who knows, it may be
helpfull to others too.

The ERROR: Each time the the boot sequence hangs at c:\windows\system32\drivers\gagp30kx.sys.
Can't do safe mode, last good known config or normal start every time it reboots

So here is what i did after reading the prev posts:

1. I got the rc.iso file and burned to an empty cd using nero > burn image to disk

2. Put the CD into the CD-Rom of the damaged coputer, go to BIOS and change first boot drive to CD-Rom, save and exit.
3. The computer restarts and ask to boot from CD-Rom, hit any key and starts to boot.
4. Once the computer is booted from CD, it ask to press "R" for recovery "ENTER" to install windows, "F3" to exit. Hir "R" and wait for the computer to load the settings. At some point you will see a highlited menu in the lower part of the screen, then press 1 (usualy)
5. Wait a few seconds, and you will be promted to Command promt, so you wll get something like this "c:\windows>" or "c:\>". In my case i was prompted to "c:\>" and i tried to see the content of the drive "c" using command: "DIR" so i got an error.
6. At this point i tought a "CHKDSK" will be helpful so i typed: "CHKDSK /R" and it starts to check the disk.
looks like this:

7. Once the check is complete, it will return with a check sumary, usualy it says something was fixed. After that type again "DIR" to see the content of the drive "C" if ths works you myght be lucky.
8. Try to go to the windows directory by this command: "cd windows" don't get scared if you get an answer like this "Access Denied", i got it too bt it doesn't matter.
9. Type EXIT, you machine will restart.
10. Enter BIOS and change back the first boot drive to HDD (this is optional, anyway the computer boot from HDD if the CD-ROm is empty)
11. Take out the CD from CD-Rom
12. When computer starts you will be prompted again to chose : Safe Mode, + command + network, Last good know config, and start normaly. Try to start it in safe mode first, if you reach the safe mode screen even if you can't login because of admin password, restart the computer and go to normal mode. VOILA it worked for me it myght work for you too.

PS: Don't know what was the cause, but i myght have an ideea. When i shut down the computer it installs the new updates, so i guess it installed a new driver for video card or chipset. Anyway it myght be from the HDD too... If you have any ideea just post here, i'm curious

All I done to fix this is to obtain your favourate boot cd with a registry restore (I used UBCD4Win to make my own) then used the registry restore.

I just had the same problem. Hangs on boot (CD, safe mode etc.) at gagp30kx.sys.

Computer only had the integrated graphics.

Solved it by installing an AGP video card. Reboot - bingo!
Installed the driver for it and it's all good.

Worth it to note that the integrated video card driver is missing in the Device Manager.
The possibility of a faulty hard driver is still not ruled out.

SOLVED:

System kept hanging on gagp30kx.sys

Could not repair with XP disc because it kept hanging as well.

Inserted a Windows 7 disc, and clicked the repair options from there.

Selected Command Prompt

Typed:
c:
[enter]

cd system32
[enter]

cd drivers
[enter]

rename gagp30kx.sys to gagp30kx.bak
[enter]

exit
[enter]

Should reboot

Now I booted into safemode again and it seemed to hang for like 5-10 minutes but then it finally booted up.

Took my mouse like another 10 minutes to work... which was kind of weird, but, now I'm just running some spyware programs and such, trying to make sure its all good.
