My problem is with my son's computer Internet Explorer (I use Firefox). I have enabled security on IE 6.0 but gave him the password as he has proven reliable lately but his brother still has a problem visiting [bleep] sites.
In the "Allowed Sites" box a blank entry keeps appearing that seems to allow any site to be visited. I can delete it but it keeps coming back next time I open IE. I have changed the password but it still comes back. I suspect there is a backdoor or trojan entry in the IE startup registry that I cannot find (of course I don't understand much of what I just said). I suspect an expert friend of his installed this to bypass having to enter the password all the time.
He did have Windows XP SP1 which I have updated to SP2 but that still did not fix the problem.
I have used Ad-aware, Spybot, and SpyOnThis (instead of HijackThis) because I did not feel like an "expert". SpyOnThis found 5 Backdoors, 1 Trojan and 182 spywares which I said remove...now it finds nothing.
I am willing to delete IE and reinstall it (or the new IE 7 beta) but my attempts at deleting it thru the add/remove programs seem to be unsuccessful. Also I am not sure this would actually remove the registration entry which is causing the problem (making an assumption here). I am also willing to restore the IE registry to default or delete most of them if someone thinks they can find the right entry(s).
