Ok, after reviewing the results I am now leaning towards NOD32. Sounds good, right? :whistling:

Stormknight6.... In your 1st post you're considering AVG as your AV software. Then you're on to Kaspersky, then BitDefender, then Nod32. No criticism intended, I'm with you and in the same boat, "dazed & confused" (name that group). Simply a rehash of the difficulty that all of us WWW pilgrims (and top "techies") deal with when looking for the "Perfect" AV software. In a nutshell, the "Perfect" AV software does not exist. You have done some research by now and likely have learned this. It is absolutely true that no single AV software catches 100% of viruses 100% of the time (keep in mind that AV software generally does not look for all malware).
and use online scans in addition to your PC AV software.

So, as starjax recommends, do some research and choose what works best for you. Tough decision my friend and I'm right there with you. Have not made up my mind yet either. Until I do, I'll continue running NAV 2006. My next choice was Nod32 but I'm awaiting responses from some IT pals.

Yes, the boat rocks many times :whistling: This is because people keep swaying me differently. I think NOD32 is the final answer, as that's what research proves. I can't compete with that. I want to make sure that out of the ones I'm considering, that NOD32 is the right protector. Yes, nothing is perfect, of course, but I want something better than Norton at least. Oh yes, and I have to buy this by tomorrow, so I'm a bit confused

ok, finally found a reliable source for an av comparison:

http://www.castlecops.com/compare-5

Kaspersky has been around for a long time. almost all av products liscnece technology from them. A long time ago they had an affiliation with another vendor. I used the product at that time and was very impressed with it. Not ever heard anything bad about thier product.

One of the most important things IMO, is customer support. symantec has an excellent online knowledge base. Ewido is working on thier knowledge base, but frankly they don't have a real need for it. They are very responsive to inquiries. Same goes for Kaspersky. Trend micro has been around for a while, has a product that works well and has moved intelligently inregards to malware detection.

PandaSoftware, while the online scanner is pretty good I can not recoomend thier products. they have a terrible website interface. No removal tools available online, even though I know they have a removal tool. Terrible customer support.

Nod32: I can only report mixed results. overall average.

I would say that you are considering Kaspersky and bit defender. both have good ratings. If they offer free trial versions give them a try and see which one you like.

Finally, a website I know of! lol Thanks much for this! AVG is much better looking than people say... It's just a bit weaker than NOD32... Not by much... AVG premium is the best one :whistling:

Wow guys, I had no idea how bias and wrong a lot of those research companies are... They're way off! I'm confident in this one... I love CastleCops lol Well, I won't disappoint you all... The moment you've all been waiting for... Flame just changed his mind for what is it, like the fifth time now? lol AVG Pro looks like the most promising protector out there. I think that's my next stop as soon as I wake up :whistling: Have a great 4th! (Assuming you celebrate it)

Just keeping everyone up-to-date, I saw the CastleCops ratings, and compared them with the rest and came to the conclusion that I don't oersonally know anyone with NOD32, nor have I ever tried it. A also did some of my own research, which showed me that AVG Pro was right there with NOD32. I have AVG free on another computer, and I have very good word of mouth about AVG, so AVG Pro won this battle :help: I just want to say thanks to everyone :) I looked through every article, and listed to all the opinions. I think I have now made an informed decision :whistling: Thanks again

Stormknigh6.... Glad to hear you have reached a resolution re: your choice for AV software. A frustrating process for anyone, including the most knowledgeable. Let us know how AVG Pro works out for you. We will all be interested to hear your experiences.

As for Nod32, a friend has recently switched to this software, am awaiting his report. He has noted, as have others, that Nod32 is not for the average home user since there are decisions to be made re: the multiple modules that Nod32 runs. He has reported that memory usage is way down from when he ran NAV2006.

starjax.... Can't say I agree that castlecops comparison is a reliable source for AV software. The categories that are listed on castlecops chart do not include some of the categories that are most important to all of us, namely, how do these software fare against independent AV testing (perhaps such info. is offered elsewhere on castlecops website, I did not have time to investigate today). Thus sites like AV-test, AV-Comparatives, etc. I am far more interested in a software's ability to catch & stop malware than I am in ease of use, ease of install, etc.

As for Symantec's knowledge base, no doubt they have substantial information available. But if you run into an issue that requires direct contact w/ Symantec's support center be patient. Over the last 10 or so years that I have utilized Symantec I have run into several issues that required phone call assistance. You start off in another country (we all know where, no slam intended) reciting boiler plate instructions and end up after several unsuccesful calls being referred to a "Senior Support Technician" somewhere in North America, we'll call you, don't call us scenario. A very frustrating and time consuming experience that I have also encountered w/ other Big U.S. companies (e.g., Dell, Earthlink, etc.). The only exception to this that I've encountered to date is my companies web server, GoDaddy.com. First call went directly to a "Senior". Problem solved first call.

Happy holiday to all. It's Miller time folks :whistling:

Wow thanks for the replies :) I'm thinking of Kaspersky right now... Any thoughts? I just got an e-mail back from Norton, which says that Norton GoBack and Norton Ghost do NOT require a yearly subscription, which is good, becuase I want to keep those two and dump off the rest of SystemWorks. So now, who knows how to use the uninstaller so I only uninstall what I don't need, and still keep what I do?

I`m thinking of doing this now having seen how much its going to cost to renew my Norton sub which is a bad enough price as it is but they want an extra £12 to pay it over the phone for `admin` - errrr, ASDA does`nt charge extra when I pay for my shopping by debit card, nor does anywhere else that I`ve used it to pay for things in shops or over the phone :help:
No one ever will persuade me to shop online, its a personal choice that wont change no matter how many people tell me its `safe` and I wont be forced to do it because of outrageous `admin` costs either !
ALso they are pushing a different system which is probably why the sub renewal for systemworks is so high, I suppose to get people thinking they may as well pay a small extra difference for the new sparkly package - except the new one does`nt work on 98SE so fat lot of use that is !

That aside, Norton has let a virus through to infect my PC which it only found two days ago, the symtdi.vxd issues [ Norton related ] have been giving me a major headache as Keith knows :whistling: so the extortionate amount symantec want for me to update is downright insulting. Strange that it got infected though as I only use Yahoo for email - hmmmm, they scan with Norton as well..... assuming it came via an email that is - anyone know anything about the Bat.SillyB.gen virus ?? [ i did ook it up on the symantec site but am none the wiser about that one ! ].

I have used McAffee in the past and that was a problematic system so I ditched it apart from Firewall. Like you I want to keep Go-Back but Norton AV has lost a longtime customer with their greed.

Sooooo, I too am looking for an alternative but preferably a free one for now as I don`t want to pay out for yet another which turns out to be as much of an annoyance as Norton has been lately and as I wont shop for things online, thats a route I dont want to go so trying a trial one then having to pay for the `proper` one online is out of the question.

I know many people who swear by AVG so those who use it, is it as good as it claims ? And will it conflict with Go-Back if I leave that in and get rid of the rest of the Norton stuff ?

I did read all the posts and all the recommendations of other systems, but to be honest they left my head spinning somewhat
