Hi richclan...

Do you have external devices (particularly USB) connected to the machine?

As wannabe1 was suggesting: remove all external USB and firewire devices on your next boot. Many of these devices have the bad habit of making XP hang on boot.

Can you get into the boot options screen by pressing F8 ? If so then try the last good configuration option.

If not you can try a repair install.

On the machine you are on now...press and release the Caps Lock key one time only.

On the machine you are fixing...is the disk you used for the repair a recovery cd supplied by the machine's manufacturer?

This isn't sounding good...

Can you boot to the cd and press R at the first screen to access Recovery Console? (If you are prompted for the Admin password, leave it blank and press "Enter".)

You should get to a screen that lists the operating system(s) installed on the machine. It should be the first screen after the password prompt. Do you get this list?

yes i do get this screen however it gets worse  it only sees the d drive the one with win 98 that crashed a few years ago.

what if i erased the boot sector, would xp re-write it and possibly restart?

now my son tells me that he thinks someone on a counterstrike game gave him a virus. i hope not.
we are behind a router w/firewall.

hope you had a good 4th :whistling:
