I am on a limited budget at this time, trying to finish a master's of science degree, and needing to purchase a 'new' computer to replace an existing home computer which is nonfunctional. This 'new' computer will be used for basic data analysis and word processing (e.g., the standard Excel and Microsoft Word software) and more advanced analysis that includes working with large graphics (e.g., ArcView software and the capacity to download large base maps). I have been looking at the Tigerdirect.com website http://www.tigerdire...940&msg=1076885
It looks like there are some good deals on this website. Does anyone know if this particular company is reputable (e.g., know of anyone who has purchased a product from this website and been satisfied with the product) or have general recommendations on whether it is wise to go with a refurbished computer from a website like this or invest in a completely new computer (from a reputable company like Dell Computers)?

If you are looking for a long lasting computer without problems in the near future then do not buy a refurbished computer since all the parts are older and will have more wear and usage on them. Also if they have a warranty then this may not be a problem. To check if they are reputable search their name in google and see what comes up to them in customer feedback. I know of some sites (here in nz) that are dedicated for people to post how good the service of the online companies are so the consumer can decide where to buy. Also If you are on a budget you could try one of the smaller companies that sell computers such as a small computer shop. Though they are more likely to go out of business than dell so that is up to you but you can probably get a better value for money pc from them.

Tiger direct is a very good company I have purchased computer parts from them.

In your situation though I would buy a Dell, you can get one for $500 US that will be fine for what you want to use it for.

However we are on a hardeware forum so I hope you don't mind me throwing this in for others, I would never recommend any name brand computer if you are even remoetly considering building your own, the reason is you will build a much better computer with much better parts for about the same money and add the fact that you will not need tech support because you know every part in it and have Geeks to Go.
