Hi

I have read a lot of posts in the (vain) attempt to resolve this issue without having to trouble any of you for your help, but to no avail. The problems I have are as follows:

- About:blank hijack
- Can't launch MyComputer, Recycle Bin or Control Panel (something to do with SysFader I think)
- Have got some unsavoury favourites that have been put on my favourites which I can't seem to delete (they just reappear when I launch IE)
- get loads of anti-Adware & Spyware pop-ups
- finally (and this may be unrelated), all of a sudden I can't seem to view my messages from my web-based e-mail system. I get the "Inbox" but nothing happens when I click on the new message to see it (i.e. no new window launches)

I have done the usual stuff already, ie run AdAware, CW Shredder, Spybot and About:Blaster. I have just re-booted after doing all those and here is my HijackThis Log:

Can someone tell me what to try next! I called up a local IT company and they told me that if I took it to them they would reprogram the whole computer for me .... for £150!! I would rather make a reasonable donation and solve it myself as it is now feels like a personal war!

Many thanks

Hello and welcome to GTG.

First a quick question. Have you tried to do any fixes yourself with HiJackThis?

The reason for this question is that I dont see anything horrible in your log. If you did fix things, you may have removed the traces that I need to see to be able to properly assess your infection.

If you did do your own fixes, please follow these instructions.

To restore the backups:
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click Open the Misc Tools section
  • Click the Backups button
  • Place a check mark next to everything in that window
  • Click Restore
  • Click Yes
  • Reboot your computer
  • Re-open HiJackThis and post a new logfile for review.
If you did not, then just post back and we will go from there.

Thanks for the reply ScHwErV. Funnily enough, having posted the HijackLog when I re-booted it seemed to be much better. I now don't have about:blank although I still get the odd anti-spyware pop up. What does happen though is that when I now launch IE for the first time in a session it takes about 30 seconds for my homepage to launch. Once it has done it it is fine and I can access pages quickly - could this be some of the anti-spyware software that I have dowloaded (the ones that GTG recommends) doing some sort of check first behind the scenes?

Before I do what you suggest, will this put all the old bad stuff back on my computer? Am happy to if you are sure that I can get rid of it again but having spent weeks trying to tackle it I don't want to upset the applecart!

The only other thing that I can't do is to see my e-mails from my web-based e-mail. I can see the inbox but nothing happens when I click on the message - normally it would open up the message. I am sure this is unrelated but any thoughts on this would be much appreciated.

Look forward to hearing from you.

I am sure that we can get rid of it again. It will hold the secrets to the infections that are on your computer. I do see a few trojans in your log, but the problems you describe seem bigger than that so I want to be sure we get the root of your problem and not just some side effects.

This may cause your computer to return to its previous state and may be annoying for awhile, but let me assure you that we can remove the problems once again and this time hopefully for good.

As I suspected, you definately have a much worse infection than I could previously see in your log.

There is a program to download and special instructions to follow on this website. This tutorial was made specifically for the bube virus, but it will work very well for the infection that you have.

You will need to disable your current AntiVirus program in order to install KAV.

After you are finished with that, please reboot and post a fresh HiJackThis log.

Hi Scwerv

I followed the link to the Kaspersky download site but had some problems. Managed to download it fine but when I got to the part where KAV was connecting to the internet to get the updates it took ages. After about 1 hour it had only updated 12% and so I thought something must be wrong (it was only trying to download 5,000 KB and I am on 1MB boradband so should have taken no time at all. In the end I cancelled the download, but then the whole computer went into super-slow mode. I rebooted but it took about 20 minutes just to get to the start. I couldn't even open IE. I eventually managed to re-boot in Safe Mode and removed the software via Control Panel. The speed is fine again now but I obviously haven't solved the problem yet.

Do you know what this could be? Is it worth trying to re-install it or is there something else I should try?

Thanks for your help so far - here is my log again if it helps......

If you are willing, I would like to try KAV again and see if you can get it to install. Do you have another Antivirus program installed? If so, you may have to disable it temporarily in order to get KAV to run properly. After we have you all clean, you can uninstall KAV and re-enable your other Antivirus.

I don't think I have any more anti-virus programs enabled but is there any way to cheack easily? I have things like Spysweeper, Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard but I assume these don't count as anti-virus. I also have Trendmicro Office Scan - do I need to switch this off? Once you have confirmed this I will have another go

Thanks

Trend Micro is a virus scanner and will need to be disabled in order for KAV to work correctly.

You are correct in that SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and SpySweeper are not antivirus. Anti-Spyware and Anti-Virus are very different.

Hi ScHwErV. Apologies for delay - the Trend Micro program was password protected so had to find out what the password was to be able to instal it. Anyway, have successfully run Kaspersky and let it do a full search although it did not find anything untoward. What next? Here is latest Logfile

Very glad to hear you got everything sorted out. Next we move along to the manual part of the removal.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {CBD9D6D1-ECFD-7C47-E8C5-513265678C4D} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\addho.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [s7ri35S] autmgr10.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [6.tmp] C:\DOCUME~1\Richard\LOCALS~1\Temp\6.tmp.exe 1 10001
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [dw0sRRe5h] atrley.exe
O4 - Startup: Microsoft Find Fast.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE <== Optional and not malware, but recommended - Resource Hog

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\DOCUME~1\Richard\LOCALS~1\Temp\6.tmp.exe
atrley.exe *
autmgr10.exe *
ALCMTR.EXE *

* = Likely in C:\Windows\System32 folder. If not, please search by Start - Search - Files and Folders - All files and folders.

Folders and files with a tilde (~), means that there is a file/folder that starts with the six characters in front of the tilde, note that there may be spaces in the name. If there are more than one, please report them back and do not delete!

[color=red]After that, Reboot.

After you reboot, please post a fresh HijackThis log.

Have done as you say and have posted the new log below. I used the Search facility to look for the files which you identified and only came across ALCMTR.EXE in C:\Windows and C:\Program Files|Realtek\InstallShield. I have therefore not delted them and await your further instruction on this (also found similar looking files called ALCFDRTM.exe and ALCWZRD.EXE in c:\windows.

The 6.tmp.exe file only came up in the search when I included all hidden files in the search. It came up in the Google directory (!) - presumably I must have tried to search for this file using Google in the past? I assume this is OK and I have not deleted but please let me know if I do need to

Thanks
Richard

Your log looks good from here. How is everything running?

You should delete the 6.tmp.exe no matter where it is.

As for the rest, just give it a few days and see how things are running.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

Everything is running fine, although when I boot up I still get the warning that someone has tried to re-set my homepage. However, when I launch IE the homepage is fine. More of an annoyance than anything else but apart from that everything is fine. Thanks very much for your help - much appreciated.

One final question - what would you recommend as the best anti-virus software & firewall? XP seems to have its own firewall and obiously at the moment I am running Kapersky on a trial basis for the anti-virus. I have just purchased the McAfee internet security suite although have not unboxed it yet as I would value your opinion on whether it is any good (it was on offer!)

Thanks again
Richard
