XP boot errors and now a confusing virus!

Hi,

I am new to this and tried to follow all the instructions prior to posting this. My problem started in early June and has since escalated. It is a new laptop (purchased in February) and it started having boot errors. It can eventuallly boot after a half hour of re-starting. There were a couple of "entry points not found", like winlogon.exe, and lsass.exe, as well as "ordinal 1296" not being found as well.

Now, when I run the free trojan cleaner, McAfee says there is a Malformed Virus and it cannot be cleaned. I scanned and no virus. I do keep updates with McAfee, and clean with MRU Blaster, AdAware, SpyBot, and Spyware Blaster.

It is running slower and slower by the day. I hope you can help me. Thanks in advance and sorry this is so long.

Hi Heens. Sorry we missed you on the first go-round. We'll take care of you this time around. :help:

I did not find anything in your log that was malware-related. Let's try a few more things and dig a little deeper to see if something nasty is behind this. :whistling:

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan

Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
A new window will open...click the Check Now button
Enter your Country
Enter your State/Province
Enter your e-mail address and click send
Select either Home User or Company
Click the big Scan Now button
If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE and Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As", in FF it's "Save Link As") to download Silent Runners.

Save it to the desktop.
Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
You will receive a prompt:
- Do you want to skip supplementary searches?
  click NO
If you receive an error just click OK and double-click it to run it again - sometimes it won't run as it's supposed to the first time but will in subsequent runs.
You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
Once you receive the prompt All Done!, open the text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.

*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

And, please give me a new hijack this log too. :blink:

I still don't see anything. let's do two more things before I turn you over to the xp/2000 forum.

Can you rename your hijack this log to look.exe and post the results?

Also, this is something Keith, one of our administrators recommends in cases like your's.

Click start then run, type prefetch then press enter, click edit then select all, (all files will highlight), right click any file, click delete, confirm

Click start then all programmes, accessories, system tools to run disc clean up

Reboot

Click start then all programmes, accessories, system tools to run defragmenter

Download, install and run Tune Up 2006 Trial

Run Tune Up disc clean up

Run Tune Up registry clean up

Disable the anti virus programme then click Optimize and Improve to run Reg Defrag, the screen will lose colour during the process which can take a few minutes and then needs a reboot

Check the anti virus programme is running

Those will have cleared the drive of obsolete software errors

These are suggestions for making the most of the free trial

Click optimize and improve then system optimizer to optimize the computer, select computer with an internet connection from the drop down menu, this also requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to accelerate downloads, select the speed just above your actual connection speed, this requires a reboot.

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to run system advisor

If no change

You can use this guide to repair XP

Possibly, you will need to press the start button and keep tapping the delete key, (possibly F2) until the PC enters set up. Change the boot order to CD ROM Drive then hard drive, press F10 then press enter, load the XP CD then type Y then press enter, as it reboots, look for press any key to load from CD, press enter

You will need the XP product key to complete this

If you have audio / video files which are subject to DRM you should check with the provider for known issues with performing an XP repair install

XP Repair Install

Windows XP repair feature won't delete your data, installed programs, personal information, or settings. It just repairs the operating system

After running XP Repair you will need to install all Windows Updates

Hi Coach,

I have a question. Do you want me to post a new log (with it named look.exe) BEFORE anything is done? Or do you want the new log AFTER the items you suggested (like the prefetch, and the downloads)

let's try one more thing:

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan

Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
A new window will open...click the Check Now button
Enter your Country
Enter your State/Province
Enter your e-mail address and click send
Select either Home User or Company
Click the big Scan Now button
If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

Hello,

Here is the scan results. I did not do anything else after the scan and it stands as is.

After doing the prefetch instructions and TuneUp 2006 trial, I did have two stop error screens at two different start ups. The language used starts off by saying "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer."

Then it has two different lines that follow: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, the other one reads KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR.

I hope this helps you some.

My gut tells me that this is a system error. Please make a post in the xp forum and link to this page. Tell them I cleared you of malware. I will keep this thread open in case you need to come back here and post additional questions. If you don't get an answer in a day or so, post back here and i will see what I can do.
