Mulit-use computer (kids). Whenever I boot up my HP Pavillion 761n w/Windows XP Home Edition, I get the HP logo then go right into Selective startup. If I select any of the options, i.e., Safe, Safe w/Networking, or Last known good config., it goes back to Selective start up. If I wait and allow the computer to count down 3 times Windows will eventially boot up. When shutting down I get an error message "End Program - Ending program - hpcmpmgr.exe" Please Wait! Then an error message "This Program Not Responding - Windows will Shutdown". I've tried to delete the file associated to hpcmpmgr.exe (HP Coretech), but access was denied. Not sure whether it is this program I am having problems with starting-up and shutting-down, or another of the 48 processes running (Windows Task Manager) interferring. Can you help?

Reboot in safe mode (by tapping F8 at startup and select safe mode from the menu) and remove the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\frsk.exe <-- This File

Then, please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Had problems "requesting network attention" logging onto AOL server after I removed C:\WINDOWS\frsk.exe and used HijackThis "fix checked" as recommended. Still have original problem. Whenever I boot up my HP Pavillion 761n w/Windows XP Home Edition, I get the HP logo then go right into Selective startup. If I select any of the options, i.e., Safe, Safe w/Networking, or Last known good config., it goes back to Selective start up. If I wait and allow the computer to count down 3 times while it is in Select Mode, Windows will eventially boot up. Then when shutting down I get an error message "End Program - Ending program - hpcmpmgr.exe" Please Wait! Then another error message "This Program Not Responding - Windows will Shutdown". I've tried to delete the file associated to hpcmpmgr.exe (HP Coretech), but access was denied.

You could disable it from the startup programs.

Go to Start > Run and type in msconfig and hit OK. Click on the "Startup" tab and uncheck hpcmpmgr.exe

Hit Apply and then OK and restart your computer.
