I just reformatted my hard drive and I'm reloading everything. I reloaded windows XP professional which the computer was running before some flies were corrupted, anyways, after reloading XP it was downloading the updates and it got to downloading service pack 2 (SP2), after downloading and installation was completed it prompts you to restart your computer which I did and as it gets to the windows XP screen in restarts itself and does this continously. I have very little installed on the system. When I've researched this topic about all I come up with is that there is a conflict with umax scanner driver. I don't have this installed on my system, so anyone with any ideas?

Sounds like a corrupt SP2 install

Turn on the computer with the Windows XP disc in the CD/DVD drive.

When prompted to start from the CD, press any key and Press the R key to run the Recovery Console.

Choose your windows installation and insert the administrator password.

At the C:\WINDOWS prompt, type

cd $ntservicepackuninstall$.
<enter>

cd spuninst.
<enter>

batch spuninst.txt
<enter>

This batch file manually removes Service Pack 2 from the computer.

This process takes several minutes. Let it run for about 15 minutes just to be safe

When you regain control of the computer type:
Exit
<enter>

The computer will restart to the point prior to the Service pack install

Start > Run.
Regedit
<enter>

Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RPCSs.

In the right pane, double-click ObjectName.

An Edit String dialog box displays. In the dialog box, type:
Localsystem. Click OK.

File > Exit

Restart the computer.

Start > Control Panel

Double click "Add or Remove Programs"

Wait until the list populates, select Windows XP
Service Pack 2, and then click Remove.

In the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Removal Wizard dialog box,
click Next.

Service Pack 2 inspects the configuration, checks for necessary disk
space, stops services, restores catalogs, and then runs processes before
removal.

The computer deletes installed SP2 files and copies backup files to the
hard drive.

In the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Removal Wizard dialog box, click Finish to restart the computer.

Run a chkdsk, defrag and reinstall sp2

I did everything that you mentioned and then reinstalled SP2 but I got the same results, it still restarts when it gets to the Window XP screen. Any other ideas?

wait....when you ran without sp2, did it run properly?

Yes, I had no problems just had the balloon stating that support for SP1 would end and that I need SP2

hmmm...

well, my first inclination is that the issue is a BIOS update....I have run into a few pcs that will nto work with sp2

go here
choose socket 462 in first box
choose your motherboard == K7VTA3 version 1 in the second box (be careful, there are 8 versions)

and download the bios update and install


However, this cpu is running pretty hot right now at 61 degree celcius.

Does this ever reboot with sp1?

Sorry about the report. No I haven't had any trouble before. This system has been running SP2 prior to me reformatting it. The reason for the reformat was it was getting clutter and I had some windows file corrupt, but prior to that it was working fine.

did you try the bios update.

When you installed, did you install Windows XP rtm, then sp1, then sp2?

I haven't been able to get the bios update yet, the link that you provided didn't open for me, I went to the web site of my motherboard and found the bios, but the ones that I found were only 2 weeks difference from my version so I'm still looking for it.

Yes I installed Windows XP, I then attempted to install SP2 but it wouldn't install, the automatic updates kept stating that it failed, so I found SP1 thinking that maybe there was something it in that would help me with SP2. I was finally able to get SP2 downloaded and install and then my current problems arose.

Do not install with that update. I would have liked to see the windows update log for that error


A TWO WEEK difference in bios updates usually means they discovered a BIG problem--I would definitely be updating BIOS if that is the case.

I flashed the bios that I was able to download with no change. This bios was working with SP2 prior to me reformatting the harddrive.

I've download SP2 with the automatic updates four or five times so I've used different downloads. The seem to install OK, just when I restart I only get to the Windows XP screen and it restarts.

You state that you would like to see the windows update log where would I find that?
