:help: Hey all! I'm hoping some one will be able to help me. I've been trying to fix this problem myself, but having no luck. I've searched in a few forums, but I've only found the post by tigerjk1029, but I don't have all of the same problems.

Here's what happening. I typed in an address, like this example: "http://bill-me-later/" and hit enter. Then I get redirected to the following:

http://www.google.co.../bill-me-later/ :whistling:

It happens with other addresses I enter too. Google keeps adding itself to the beginning of the addresses I type so, of course, I keep getting redirected to a page that tells me it can't find the address I typed. The box that appears is titled "Dell Search Page - Microsoft Internet Explorer". To me, this seems strange since I wasn't trying anything that was even related to "Dell" (except that's my computer).

My computer is a Dell Dimension E310, Intel Pentium 4, running Windows XP. IE is my browser.

My HijackThis Log is as follows:

Hello and welcome to GeeksToGo. My name is Kat, and I will be helping you. I am pretty sure I have found the source of your problem. :whistling:

According to This Site (which we use to research much of what is found in a HJT log), the following entry:

O2 - BHO: GoogleAFE - {CA6319C0-31B7-401E-A518-A07C3DB8F777} - c:\Program Files\GoogleAFE\GoogleAE.dll

is classified as: Google.com Search related, found on Dell computers. Responsible for redirecting 404s

I want you to open HJT and scan for a log. Place a check next to that above entry ONLY, then be sure all other windows and programs are closed. Click the "Fix Selected" button.

Now reboot to Safe Mode, by continually tapping the F8 key as the machine begins to boot, and choosing Safe Mode at the top (use your keyboards' arrow keys to navigate, and hit Enter to choose). Once in Safe mode, go to Start>Control Panel>Add and Remove programs. Please uninstall GoogleAFE

Now navigate to C:\Program Files\GoogleAFE and delete that folder.

Reboot the computer normally, and let me know if everything is working now. If it is not, please post a fresh HJT log here in a reply.

Hey Kat!

Thank you so much for answering my post. I did as you suggested and everything seems okay. Time will tell.

When I fixed the entry with HijackThis, I restarted in safe mode like you said. When I went to delete "GoogleAFE" with Add/Remove Programs, it wasn't there. I did delete its file folder, which was still there.

Thanks for your advice.

Now, I have a different problem that I was wondering if you could help out. I'm trying to download Windows Update and a box appears saying that it needs the Windows 2000 cd in the D drive to be able to find what it's looking for. It won't let me download the Update. Do you have any suggestions for that or do I need to start a separate post?

Look forward to hearing from you again!

I don't know much about how Windows Update works. :whistling: I would start a post in the Windows 2000 forum of this site about that.

I'll leave this post open for a few days. If you DO run into any other problems, let me know.
