Hello,
I was just wondering that if i did a reinstall of Windows and my current win directory is WINDOWS.2, would manual deletion of the other, older win directories (WINDOWS, WINDOWS.1 etc) affect anything on my PC? I am quite sure that it won't but just to be 100% sure, I don't want to mess things up.

if you have any info in the "my documents" folders in those installs that you wnat to keep..youll need to copy that data out...other than that you should be fine...make sure that your boot.ini is pointing to the right install

fonts are still stored in c:\windows\fonts....so you would want to copy those over to your new Fonts folders if you have special fonts

I have, on occassion, needed the c:\windows\inf file to restore hard to find drivers, too

I have sometimes required C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache and C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers when initial drivers were buggy and I could not keep windows up enough to replace them


Might want to save C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts if you modified it


Other than that, once you are sure your boot.ini is pointing in the right direction, you can remove your old c:\windows

I've recovered almost 10 GB (of my 32 GB harddisc). WOW .
