Thanks in advance for the help :whistling:

The two problems i'm having are as follows...

First when I open my browser using a shortcut from my desktop or my favorites list I seem to get two browsers that open. The SECOND one is the page I want but the first is blank without a web address but in the address bar I have what looks like a hand palm side up in a cupping formation. This happens with every shortcut or favorite EXCEPT my homepage.

Second probloem is when I open my email (Outlook Express) it takes about 20-30 seconds for it to find the host. It used to be almost immediate.

I have downloaded updates and run scans for both Ewido as well as Highjack This while in Safemode. Both logs are posted below.

Thanks again
Art

rename
C:\Program Files\Messenger
to
C:\Program Files\oldMessenger

How do I provide a screen shot?

I did notice in my programs list a similar icon with the title "Remote Assistance". The only difference is the hand appears to be holding a piece of paper where as in the address bar of the browser the hand is empty. I also noticed when looking for the C:\Program Files\Messenger to rename the hand was on the side under the heading "File and Folder Tasks" but instead of holding a piece of paper it was holding a folder with the words "Share This folder" next to it. If I put the curser over the icon it tells me that it "makes selected folders available on a network so other people can view it"

I think the renaming the messenger folder has worked. Thank you.

How to provide a screen capture

Select the window that you want to show us

Press the ALT key and the Print Screen (sometimes this key is labeled Prt Sc, or Prt Scr) simulultaneously

Open Microsoft Paint (usually Start > All Programs > Accessories > Paint)

On the menu bar at the top, choose EDIT > PASTE

Save the file on the desktop by choose FILE > SAVE AS

Click on the DESKTOP button on the left side of the dialog box, then in the FILE NAME box type
screen1
and under SAVE AS TYPE, choose
JPEG

Click the SAVE button

Close Paint

To attach the file, click the ADD_REPLY button at the bottom of this thread. When the window opens, scroll below the message box to FILE ATTACHMENTS, click BROWSE, click the DESKTOP button, then choose SCREEN1, then click the OPEN button.

Now click the ATTACH button, then click ADD_REPLAY button

Below is the screen shot in question as well as two other screen shots showing other placies similar hand icon was found as I explained above.

Also I have rebooted my computer and the slow act of finding host for email continues. Apparently once found I can get out and back in without the same delay but the first time after rebooting I have the delay again. I was wondering could it have anything to do with the fact that I am using the full paid version of BitDefender 9 anti-virus/spam protector as well as the free version of AVG ?

I could not find if it is beta 2 or 3. Here is the version number I found from the properties.

7.00.5346.5 (winmain(wmbla).060413-2150)

here is the attachment of the HijackThis log.

I am going to bed now and will be out of town tonight so I may not be able to respond or read you comments until tomorrow. I will try once I wake up before leaving for the night.

look under HELP > ABOUT with IE7 open

It looks like you have both AVG antivirus and Bitdefender Antivirus? having two AV programs that both actively monitor the OS is generally a bad idea.

Running a beta program like IE7 with programs that actively monitor the browser is also likely to cause issues. There was a bug in ie7 beta 1 or two that resulted in two windows opening when tabbed browsing was disabled...did you disable it?

I cannot tell which version of bitdefender you're using, be it the av, the antispyware, etc (plus you have eiwido running)

OK....Everything is resolved. I uninstalled the free AVG software which solved my email finding host issue and I uninstalled internet explorer 7.0 Beta 2 (figured out which beta from add/remove programs) and downloaded beta 3 which solved the two browser windows issue.

Thanks for the help, you guys are GREAT!! :whistling:

great, thanks for letting us know

you can use two AV programs, you just should not run two that actively monitor your drive
