I can't get my computer to start up. When I turn it on, I get the Dell Dimension Screen which is frozen. A screen then comes up with the following message "Booting system failed at checkpoint [HDsk] Please contact Dell support. Anyone know how to fix this? The operating system is Windows XP

Do you know what a CMOS battery looks like? Unplug your case, open it , ground yourself on a metal part, and then remove it (about the size of a nickel).

Leave it out for five minutes

Reinsert--make sure you put it in correctly (there is a positive and negative side). Plug it in, try to start

This could be a sign of a motherboard failure, specifically, a cmos chip gone bad
