I am truly a novice at the computer and have the same Dr Watson Postmortem Debugger problems posted here. I did not want to do anything that has been suggested, because I don't know if each one of us has a unique problem (even though it all sounds like what my computer is doing) I am hoping someone has patience and can guide me through this step by step. I can follow instructions pretty well. :tazz:
Please let me know where to begin. Many Many thanks in advance.

Please download HijackThis version 1.99.1 from here:
http://www.downloads.../hijackthis.zip
and make sure to unzip it to a permanent folder. Then please run HijackThis, click Scan and Save log, and post the new log here. I would be happy to take a look at it.

Do you have another computer you can use internet access? You can go to that link on the other computer, and save the program, save it to a floppy or whatever you can to then put it into the other computer with the problems and open the program on that. If you have a network at home, you can get the program on another computer and share the folder.

Sorry about not getting back sooner, I couldn't find it. We do not have access to any other computers with internet.

Anyways, can I go into safe mode and try to download from the internet and get my hijack this log that way. Also, to go into safe mode, don't I restart the computer and hold down the F8 key.

I truly appreciate your help.

You cannot go on the internet in safe mode. Do you have hijackthis on your computer already? If so please run it and post a log.

You have to tap the F8 key while it's booting.

Hello, this is the fix for the CWS causing Dr. Watson to come up constantly (Dr. Watson isn't the culprit here) It's the bad CWS infection!!!

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Please download and install these programs - don't run them yet!!

Please download and unzip
About:Buster to a folder. Inside the folder is a readme file that has instructions on the use of the program.
AboutBuster MUST be updated before you use it.
Start AboutBuster, click the update button, check for update, drag the box to the side and hit download updates, close the box . Don't run it yet.

Please download and install AD-Aware.
Check Here on how setup and use it - please make sure you update it first.

Download and unzip cwsserviceremove to your desktop. use either link below:
http://computercops....ownload&id=3002
http://www.mytechsup...rviceremove.zip

Download CW-Shredder at the link below:
http://cwshredder.ne.../CWShredder.exe

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

For anyone using Windows XP, 'Search' will not automatically show hidden files even if your folder options settings are set to do that. Do this so you can see hidden files and folders - click here http://www.davehigha...ds/xphidden.zip to download xphidden.zip. Extract xphidden.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop. When done, double-click the xphidden.reg and when asked to merge say yes.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Here's the fix:

Important Step
1. Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the service called:

Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you dont find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.

2. Reboot into SafeMode. <---MAKE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO DO THIS!!

3. CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND BROWSERS Scan with Hijack This and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked"

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\aprby.dll/sp.html#37049
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\aprby.dll/sp.html#37049

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\cpgdl.dll/sp.html#37049
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\aprby.dll/sp.html#37049
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\cpgdl.dll/sp.html#37049
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {2E9CAFF6-30C7-4208-8807-E79D4EC6F806} - C:\Program Files\Submit\submithook.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F699347E-F69C-BC1B-8D16-4CC14C18FA74} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdkbt32.dll
O3 - Toolbar: Yahoo! Companion - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Companion\Installs\cpn\ycomp5_3_19_0.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [netik.exe] C:\WINDOWS\netik.exe
O18 - Protocol: icoo - {4A8DADD4-5A25-4D41-8599-CB7458766220} - C:\WINDOWS\msopt.dll (file missing)
O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 6Q'8) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\sysaq32.exe

4. Delete the following files if present:
If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

C:\WINDOWS\sysaq32.exe << This file
C:\WINDOWS\netik.exe << This file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdkbt32.dll << This file
C:\WINDOWS\cpgdl.dll << This file
C:\WINDOWS\aprby.dll << This file

5. Run AboutBuster . This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. Save the report (copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.

6. Scan with AdAware and let it remove any bad files found.

7. Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

8. Double click on the cwsserviceremove and when asked to merge say yes.

9. Run CW-Shredder - Hit the FIX button - let it run and fix what it finds.

10. Reboot into normal mode.

11. Download the Hoster from here http://members.aol.c...bee/hoster.zip. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

12. Download and run this online virus scan:
http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp
Make sure you check "AutoClean"

then reboot and post a fresh Hijack This log to see how we did.

:tazz: I cannot open the About: Buster file anyway once I downloaded it onto the computer. Do you have any suggestions on how to do this? The postmortem window pops up and blocks everything. I cannot even get the computer to start up in Safe mode. It just won't do it!!

Thanks again for everything.

Are you saving about:buster to your desktop? Make sure you do that, then you can open the file from the desktop and it has to open.

I went and downloaded the about:buster directly onto my desktop and it shows up, but will not open. The system error window keeps popping up, then the postmortem error, then everything freezes.???

I was on the phone with my sister and she suggested a system restore point. What is that and would that help me use my desktop in order to run these files or would that mess up my logs.?????

Thanks for your patience.

If you go into safe mode and run about:buster, the error should not come up.

:tazz: I cannot get the computer to come up in safe mode. When I tap the F8 key and the page comes up to highlight safemode, then I press enter. It looks like it is trying to come up and then a page comes up that says: We apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start up successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this......
Then after so many seconds, it starts up in normal mode and I cannot get into the folder on the desktop that has about: buster in it.
I feel like I am doing something wrong, because everyone else seems to be getting the fix. My computer is just not responding to the request I make.

Any suggestions??????

Hello,

Sorry but the CWS Variant took a tool on your system. I'd suggest a format of your hard drive.
