i purchased this in feb of this year, so i will call HP and hopefully they are as helpful as all of you at G2G have been to me. i will keep you informed as to the progress.

i hope this is NOT a dumb question, but could this be causing all of the problems with the other stop error messages?

The memory errors are not being helpful, and odd they didn't show before, though it could explain why it runs but forgets to restart when cold

Hope HP deal with it

hi keith and wannabe1,

i did call HP and after having them tell me to do a bios update (one i did per you guys, but did not tell them) it gave one more error message "PFN_LIST_CORRUPT" and that deals with ram failure as well.

so....they will send me a new memory stick since it is under warranty. i should be receiving it by friday.

keith, i have to ask...is there anything i should do BEFORE as well as AFTER i put the new ram from HP? i would appreciate any suggestions. HP didn't give me any instructions. thanks so much and i will keep you informed after i get the new ram...

have a great week...aloha!! :whistling:

These may help, even if it is different memory type, the precautions will be the same

hi keith and wannabe1,

i just received the new replacement ram from HP. i installed it, ran it, tested it with the memtest, and turned it off for 30 minutes. guess what...IT IS WORKING , and i have not had an error yet--now that is something that has not occurred since june 12th or so.

now, if the ram was the cause of the errors, i guess that part is now fixed. i still notice it to load pages very slowly. in one of the past posts, i was told to do the winsockxpfix. does that download stuff faster?

also, do i have to create a restore point, or something to that effect now that i have it running well? (less the slow download pace)

i will cross my fingers that this issue is over finally. i will wait for any suggestions you may have for the download slowness, as well as the other things i mentioned.

you have been very patient with me and so helpful. i am very grateful for all you have done. :whistling:

i will await your reply

Run Winsock and see how it is

If no change, did you get tune up?

i will run the win sock.

during my first postings with coachwife6, she made reference that you suggested to download the tune up tiral version. back then (like july 10th), i ran the disc clean up and the registry clean up. because of all the probs i have been having, should i re-do the tune up procedures?

thanks

That would be good

If you run XP disc clean up, click more options, clean up restore points, confirm

Then run tune up

Then set a restore point if it has improved

keith,

i am so happy!!! i did all the things you suggested in the past hours since installing the new ram. i see improvements in the loading of pages. and it has not given any stop errors. i even created a restore point. i did notice on the last two start ups that right when the icons on the desktop are showing up, it made a short sound. i went into the sound and audio device folder in control panel and played some of the windows sounds. it is a "windows xp critical stop" that sounds off. FYI, it makes the noise, runs great, no boxes pop up, so i will just let it go.

is that okay? or is there a place to check why the critical stop sound is going off?

in any event, thanks so much for the past few weeks of your expertise. i haven't gotten a chance to see wannabe1 online, so i will try to drop a line to him later. i hope all is well with him. i will wait for your last reply about the sound thing i jsut explained.

again, MAHALO for all your help.....

If it is running well, enjoy it

If the critical stop becomes a problem, post back, if more than two weeks, start a new thread

Good news though

Thank You for sticking with it

aloha keith,

i just wanted to give an update of how my HP is running. it has not given any error of any sort since the replacement of the new RAM. as far as the error noise i spoke about, haven't heard it again, so when i do, is the proper procedure to start a new thread, or look for this one?

anyways, i just wanted again to thank you for all your hard work. i have learned so much about a computer because of all of you. glad to finally say this prob is resolved!!

MAHALO from hawaii
