my name is kewal and i have been using WINDOWS XP HOME for 2 years or so now...
My computer ratings are as follows:

1.78GHZ
768 MB RAM
intel p4

My operating systems are:

Microsoft Xp home
Microsoft xp professional
Fedora core

A sidenote:
i use logon xp- a software that changes the skin of the windows logon screen

The Problem:
I use microsoft XP home. I recently changed my password and wrote it down.
i locked my workstation adn guess what it wouldnt let me in. i tried and tried.

I used my laptop to search up a few a things that would help me try to hack it or let me in one way or the other.

SINCE MY WINDOWS XP HOME WAS PRE-INSTALLED AND I DIDNT HAVE A BACKUP DISK I USED THE DISK THAT CAME WITH MY LAPTOP WHICH TOO USES WINDOWS XP HOME.

So the setup starts and hit SHIFT + F10 to get the command prompt. i typed in control userpasswords2. that ccommand opens up a dialog with all the users on the computer and a reset password button. so i reseted the password.

The setup finished. Now i had to activate my copy of windows xp home. for some reason it cannot connect to the internet. the telephone code wont work either.
this is where i am screwed.

I installed windows xp professional and thats the sole reason i am talking to you right now. but windows xp professional can connect to the internet, why cant the xp home?

what should i do now?
try to fix it
or some how unload windows xp home

Open "My Computer" and double click on the C: drive. How many folders with "Windows" or "WINNT" do you see.

Open Control Panel and double click the "System" folder. Under the "Advanced" tab, in the "Startup and Recovery" section, click on the "Settings" button. In the window that opens, click on the "Edit" button. Copy the contents of the notepad window (boot.ini) here for me.

there is only one folder named "windows in my c drive"

yes the setup process and everything ran without a problem.

Well...almost without a problem.

The laptop installation cd has most likely installed the wrong drivers for your hardware. Boot into the XP home installation, open Device Manager, and see if there are any yellow ! or ? listed. Let me know what you find.

the thing is that i cant boot winxphome, since i cant activate the copy. the internet poses a problem.

i checked from winxp professional and these are the following devices that are marked with "!"
Video Controller (VGA compatible)
Multimedia Audio controller
SM BUS CONTROLLER

yes the setup process and everything ran without a problem.

It's not polite to confuse old guys...

I need to know what device problems are present in the Home installation...I'll bet the problem getting on the internet will be found there. How long ago did you "repair" the home installation? You should have 30 days to activate.

i "repaired" just yesterday.
i cant check any of device settings or anything
since it wont let me in without activating

What happens when you boot to the repaired installation...what messages do you receive?

i dont really get messages
ill just tell you what happens one by one.
so i reboot the computer
i select xphome
the normal xphome bootskin shows up
the normal log in screen loads.
it logs me into my account.
but right before it logs me in, a dialog box comes saying "do you want to activate windows"
i say yes .
the activation options come up
the internet option wont work
the phone option wont work
the last option is to quit- atleast that works

what happens if you say "no" to the activation...

can you boot into safe mode with XP home...?

the same thing would happen in safe mode too.

if i said no, after 2 or 3 seconds the dialog box will come up again

I would do a new install of home...sounds like it didn't install properly...be sure its on its own partition
