Hi guys,

I have the Trojan Clicker.FR on my laptop. I have downloaded ad-aware and spybot, but both software programs (in safe mode and normal mode) can not complete their scans. They both get "hung up" at some point. I have AVG and have scanned in both normal and safe mode - no virsus being reported. When I go into normal Windows Xp mode my system runs at about 50% with what seems to be .exe files from I am guessing the trojan slowing my machine down. AVG every 5 mins catchs n notifes me of a virsus/trojan operating but cant clean it (but only when I have the laptop hooked up to the modem).

I have had it now about 4-5 days. It concerned me when on the second day it downloaded a piece of software, then changed my desktop settings to a webpage, and finally started to download a casino online gambling program I had nothing to do with. Halfway through the download I disconnected the ADSL modem from the laptop and got rid of the download. Since I have only plugged in the laptop to the internet to download the various programs you suggested to scan n try to clean the computer.

I have little to no experience with computers and this sort of stuff - so please help. Lately it almost seems to be getting worse as I turn on the laptop - almost nothing on the desktop responds or if it does it takes longer to upload then my grandma does to get up in the morning. (lousy sense of humore kicks in when stressed). I had read the other postings here about the same Trojan but havent a clue if I can do the same exact process to remove it. There seemed to be 3 files you had to remove at some point but I couldnt locate those same files on my directory. So figured I should post here.

Please help - it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Sam and I will be helping you. :whistling:
In order to help you we need to see what's running on your computer.

  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I see a few problems in your log. First you need to get rid of one of your antivirus programs, either AVG or Norton. You should never run more than one at a time.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:

http://downloads.sub.../Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingc.../Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Finally, please post the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt, along with a new HijackThis log into this topic.

Hey,

Thanks for getting back so fast. My Norton Antivirsus I keep turned off - or at least I was under the impression it was - I havent updated the virsus database on it in a couple of years now. I only keep it for the utilities and doctor. I keep AVG on at all times. If I need to remove the entire program just let me know and I will do so next update.

Here is the report.txt[/u]

When I booted up to send this to you, I received a series of virsus detections from AVG. From reading other posts on this trojan/virsus, I am assuming that is normal. They are Trojan Horse Clicker.FR - Trojan Horse Generic.XKS - Trojan Generic.XKS - Torjan Generic.XFV off top of my head.

Let me know whats next and thanks again.

If Norton is that far out of date, you should be able to remove the antivirus and still keep System Doctor and Norton Uitilities. I believe it will show up as separate entries in Add/Remove Programs.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of the lines listed below. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Hey,

Ok the Norton Antivirus is a part of Norton Professional 2004, and that is how the program is listed in remove function. In order to remove the Antivirus I would have to remove the entire program. If you still suggest it then I will - the added utilities from Pro isnt that important to me. Let me know.

Secondly,

Ran the HijackThis program - checked off what you indicated.

Next,

Checked settings in Control Panel - they were already set as you instructed but went through the process just in case. Went to start - cmd - flush - all done.

*First Problem*

Went rebooted the desktop came up with a warning behind it - saying the active desktop had a problem and to fix it to click a button on the screen. As there was nothing in your post about this I did not do so. When I rebooted to safe mode (first time I was distracted a sec and missed hitting F8 in time), the background/desktop seemed to have "fixed" itself. HOwever, as youll see later I am noting this because of other issues.

Next,

Downloaded Killbot - entered all 9 of the items - hit Delete - DID NOT get "PendingFileRenameOperations prompt".

Next,

Downloaded Ewido Anti-Spyware Program. Made changes to the setting. Rebooted to safe mode. Started Complete Scan.

*Main Problem*

About 130,000 files and 10+ items of interest, the ewido.exe encountered a problem - a box popped up and told me it had to close. I reran the program. Again same issue. I tried to run the fast scan. It ran without issue for 13 hours+, seemingly to "hang up" around the 130,000 file mark. I finally turned it off this morning (Sydney Australia :whistling:) and decided to post here.

When I couldnt get the program to work correctly in safe mode, I went into normal windows. However, the desktop would not respond in any way what so ever. When I went to the toolbar - all I would get would be a cursor with a thinking icon on it. I could not left or right click anywhere. To turn off the computer, I was forced to control+alt+delete and use the program to shut down. Currently, I am sending this email from my desktop (issues have been on the laptop).

So I need advice. I cant get you the logs yet because of the nonresponsive desktop. Please advise. And Thanks.

PS When I first got this virus/trojan - I had a change to my all of my "icon views" every folder or file I open now had some extra icons in them. They are faded and some say "desktop" and one that repeats is "tumbnail". I dont know what or why they are there, but have never been there before the virus/trojan appeared.

Those files are normally hidden and you must have changed a setting to show hidden files. They are actually there all of the time. You just don't normally see them.

Let's try this.
Click CTRL - ALT - DELETE to bring up your task manager. Select the processes tab and look for explorer.exe
If it's not there, go to the Application tab and click New Task.
Then click Browse and navigate to C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.exe and open it.
Now see if your desktop shows up.

Using the same method with task manager you should be able to navigate to any program and run it, including Internet Explorer.

Let me know how it goes.

Will download Ewido again and try to get it working as per your instructions.

David

EDIT: Removed Norton Antivirus and Ewido and reinstalled it from scratch. I am still getting an error with it though when trying to run the scan in Safe mode. Not sure what to do or try next.

Don't worry about Ewido. If it's giving us that much trouble, just uninstall it. We'll work around it.

Delete this folder.

I attempted to use the panda to scan. Tried it twice, however, both times it became "hung up" on scanning at ...\programs\startup\desktop.ini - not sure why - and cant seem to get it to go past that file. Will try again until I hear back from you.

Thanks.

David

Your log looks good to me. How are things working on your end? Any problems?

Yes it seems to be good now thanks. I still cant seem to get any of the spyware (Ewido - Panda - Adaware - Spybot) online or downloads to thoroughly scan my system. Took off AVG - going to redownload it and scan for virsuses. Then try again with the other scans to download and run those.

Still have the hidden files showing up and dont know how to fix it, but the malwear seems all good now - especially this annoying one :whistling:

Thanks alot

David

Uninstall Spyware Guard and then try to scan. I've known it to cause problems with other security programs.

Here's how to hide those hidden files again.
  • Click Start -> My Computer
  • Select Tools -> Folder options
  • Select the View tab and make sure that 'Do not show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled.
  • Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is unchecked.
  • Make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is checked
  • Make sure "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" is checked
