Everytime I try to play more than one mpeg on my Windows media player, it shuts the system down.

It plays .avi and .wmv fine.

What could be causing this? I know it's not a virus cos I've run my works virus scan through it.

Make sure your OS is fully updated. There are a few fixes for Media Player.

Also, you might be clean of virusses, but it could be that there is spyware or malware on your PC (especialy malware in your case)
Best to chechk for malware as well

Also, can you check the eventviewer (start > Run > eventvwr.exe) under application for possible errors

What version of Media Player do you have?
Perhaps you can try to install the most recent version. (I think v10)
