I have 7 svchost.exes showing in taskmanager.

Here is a list of them:

svchost.exe - Local service - 4.100 kB
svchost.exe - Networkservice - 4.020 kB
svchost.exe - SYSTEM - 20.912 kB
svchost.exe - Networkservice - 5.060 kB
svchost.exe - SYSTEM - 5.416 kB
svchost.exe - SYSTEM - 4.400 kB
svchost.exe - SYSTEM - 4.728 kB

Is it normal to have 7 svchost.exes running?

20.912 kB looks like alot to me because the other svchosts are all around 4.500 kB.

Thanks,

Emery.

I've got 5 running, with one over 22.000 KB

It's never a bad idea, though, to check for trojans

read this:
http://www.liutiliti...ibrary/svchost/

svchost is a necessary process. Difficult to tell how many HAVE to run.

AVG hasn't found any trojans/viruses. Also spybot S&D came up with a clean result.

I don't have any malware on my machine I think.

is it hard to tell when svchost.exe is a virus or not?

On the link in my post, there is a suggestion for a tool (Wintasks 5 Pro).
you could try that. I never tried it, so I can't tell you more about that.

My 1 and a half cents worth. I'm showing 29 processes in the list. Five are svchost.exe (all showing 00). System Idle Process is flicking between 99 and 98, taskmgr.exe is 01, csrss.exe (whatever that is, I would like to know) is flicking 00 and 01, explorer.exe is flicking 00 and 01, I've currently got ten icons showing down on lower right by the time, messenger,AVG, Spybot, etc. svchost.exe SYSTEM is 23.880 K

Search for svchost on your computer if you find a file named svchost in any folder either than windows/system32 you have a problem. Also, it's normal to have that many, if svchost is pushing 90+% you have a problem.

Thanks for your reply. I will follow your instructions after my sister is done watching a movie with her friends on my machine.

I did a search for the file svchost. It came up with 4 results in:

- C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$
- C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch
- C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386
- C:\WINDOWS\system32

It looks to me these locations are fine. I think nothing dangerous.

It is only a problem if Svchost.exe is the filename for files that are not in system32 folder. Check with that. And if svchost.exe isn't slowing down your computer, I'm pretty sure your OK.

Also search SCVHOST (note the CV) that is a virus trying to hide itself as Svchost.

I guess I am OK then. SCVHOST is known to me. I little while back I was fixing a friends machine with the process SCVHOST running. Some people just don't look careful enough at those things. They can be tricky names sometimes.

It looks like my machine is doing fine.

Thanks for all your guidance and help. :whistling:
