xp desktop problem

hello

i have a square block on my desktop and will not go away i have tried to reboot my comp and change the picture and still nothing it looks like checker board goes from bottom screen up about 3/4 upi the screen and is about two inches wide, how do i get ride of it. there are no programs running?
